I found my second half dollar for the year a couple of weeks ago and did not have the opportunity to post it until now. As usual with me, it was the only coin that I found that day, and I didn't find it until I was about 5 minutes from heading home. Of course I thought it was another can because it's so rare that I find anything this large, of value. So as I was digging the hole, in the rain, I had lost all hope, and each shovel full of dirt was dug with a feeling of "what am I doing here", lol... Thank God it was standing vertical in the hole, about 4" down, because with my attitude at the moment, I surely would have struck it with my shovel. After I pulled it out of the hole, I sobered up real quick and became grateful once again for finding another jewel to add to my collection... ;o)

I found the Mercury Dime at the same location that I have been hunting relentlessly for the past 2 weeks, at the old park near Pittsburgh, PA. I have posted numerous coins from this site and they are all in excellent condition. So far this year I have found a 1939, 1941, and 1943 Mercury Dime. What are the odds of this happening in sequential order, lol... Same thing with the half dollars. This one is from 1945 and the other one that I found was from 1943... So I guess I have to find one from 41 or 47 before the year is up, to keep the odds in my favor.

I agree, stop her from going wild!

Who's that? Your Old Lady, lol? Great... now I am going to have to change the title to "Grandma's Gone Wild!"... These coins represent the women that we dream of finding out in the field, not the one's who induce nightmares...
pretty funny bud! :laughing9: willy

yah but those upper 80 and 90 year old grannys are sitting on huge silver hoards from back when money was made of silver * be nice to old granny or you will never see them ;D --- you might get them in the will if you rub her crusty achy corn filled feet daily.

back in the day when those coins was made-- (WW2 era woman worked in factories and shipyards to help in the war effort) the woman in the photo most likely was a "hottie" for her time (LOL)-- the photo looks 1940 ish -- so shes about the same age as your ladies * you found (since the walker gal and the liberty gal on the merc were full grown women )-- the dime was not a male mercury figure but rather a winged helmeted liberty -- for freedom of thought.

Yeah... Lady Liberty is pretty hot, lol... The group of women that you are referring to are called "Rosie the Riveter".

Yeah, right, lol... I bet that Granny has either invested her hoard of silver in the slot machines or at the local bingo hall. They may appear sweet and innocent but they sure can gamble...

Super nice finds.. the Walking liberty is one of my favorites.. they just dont make em like they used too.

Thank you... I sure did work for both of these coins. I searched for about 4 hours both days that I found them and I didn't find them until the last minute, not to mention they were the only things that I found on each day. My finds really don't equal my investments, both time and money, but I truly love metal detecting so at least it's fulfilling, although not very rewarding. I wish I was finding older silver than I have, and it's not that I am not good, because I have a lot of experience. It's just not plentiful around here like it seems to be in other parts of the country...

Daaaah! :icon_scratch:

Those are your finds so you do what you think is best with them.
Thank you for even sharing your finds with us little brother.

Thank you... My only intention was to share what I found because I enjoy looking at other people's coins. I really do not appreciate the negative comments from some of the members concerning cleaning coins. Personally, I know what I am doing, so unless you want negative posts in your forum, leave them out of mine...

I appreciate all of the positive comments and support from the members and look forward to supplying more content in the future...

I hope you didn't take my comment about buffing the wrong way. It was made as a joke but also in an attempt to be helpful to someone I thought was new at this. Cleaning coins that are common dates and traded regularly as bullion is fine if that's the look you prefer. Cleaning rare and valuable coins can take hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars off the value if you ever planned to resell them. Glass cleaner sometimes contains ammonia and other harsh chemicals and that's most likely what caused the "buffed" look. I hope you not only learned what not to do with silver coins but that others here may learn from this. As for the "girls gone wild" title it's great. The coins we use daily are boring and can't hold a candle to the awsome designs of the past. My favorite "girls" are the bust coins but the Walking Liberties & Morgan dollars are high on the list as well. Have a great day and happy hunting.

Silver won't corrode but it will tarnish and turn black over time. Thus silver polish for sterling silverware. Monty
