Getting permission via email

I've been researching a lot of old schools and churches, and decided to try my hand at asking for permission via email. Most of these places have a website that provides a pastor or principal's email address, and I'm much better with the written word than the spoken word. Whaddaya know? I'm batting four for four, all yes, and a lot of interest in what I might find.

Now I say "I", but what I did was say that my young daughters will be helping me (true), and I assume this might help. Sort of like when a single man takes a puppy for a walk in a park--a great way to meet the ladies, I hear. Also, I have offered to take pictures of anything I might find so the pastor or principal can share it with the congregation or students. One principal of a school that's been around for almost 90 years sounds almost ready to run out and buy her own metal detector.

Anyway, I figured most of you have tried this, but wanted to share with you that it appears to work well, at for schools and churches.

Sorry, Getting off the Original Subject again, for those who like asking in person. IF YOU DON'T MIND A LITTLE FALSE ADVERTISING ; stop by every Town/City FIRE COMPANY. ask if they have any Hats Or T-Shirts for sale. When Your IN _____town wear the ____town Fire Company Hat, & when you go to *****Town , Stick on the *****town hat. & when you ask for permission just tell them your name & leave out where your from, unless they ask. even so, If people see you wearing something that mentions a familiar local place or Organization, they are more relaxed. ................... I just wish I knew where to pick up a PA STATE POLICE cap ;D

Hey Jeff, a HazMat or clean room suit with respirator will get you almost anywhere unquestioned if can dig in it! Last time I saw a set of 'em on the street I turned tail and ran. Didn't WANT to know!

Hey Jeff, that's very true! I was traveling once and due to delays and airpline mismanagement, I had to spend the night in O'Hare (literally, in the airport). The next morning, I flew into Dulles and needed a fresh shirt, so I bought a touristy FBI shirt from an airport vendor.

WHEREVER I wear that shirt, I get a WHOLE different vibe from people! I don't want to talk about it here, but it has led to some very interesting moments! But people treat me with a different kind of respect. Strange.

have any of you come across any towns that are just dead set against any MD'ing ? no mater how you contact them or how curtious you are.

Pat.

I am with you as far as the written word. A few weeks back after talking to a pastor of a local church and getting an ok *if* it was ok with the church board, my brother e-mailed the head board member to ask for permission. The property was owned by the church and adjacent to the church but was being sold to be plowed over and developed. My brother figured there would be no problem in obtaining permission and sent a nice formal e-mail asking permission along with a waiver and so on..all very nicely done. What he got back was a somewhat scathing e-mail threatening him with prosecution should he even set one foot upon the land. If it had been in person I shudder to think..... but as it was my brother just returned the mail saying it was a shame in itself that the church was so enamored with greed, but a whole degree of shame more so that the guy was willing to let what could be a good chunk of history possibly relating to his church just to be plowed under and never seen.

Please don't discuss hair on this forum as I am very sensitive about mine. It first turned gray and now it's turning loose! :D :D :D

Harrisburg , Pennsylvania? is the ONLY City, I'v ever contacted that said Metal Detecting is NOT allowed in ANY of their Parks.

? An Intresting Side Note. From other Detectorists who Search the City Parks. The Grounds Keepers Don't know this, and Give Permission.

I was camping at a Maryland state park and had gotten permission from the park ranger to metal detect. The next afternoon another ranger took over and raked me over the coals about what I was doing. He did not care that the other ranger had given me permission or that park regulations allowed metal detecting. I think next time I will insure who is on duty and get that permission in writing. Nothing ruins your day like being jumped on when you are not in the wrong.

Hmmmmmmm, well as most of u know im the kind of guy that says "well that would take FOREVER, just do it now" so I advise u not to take my advice but, I would do it without permission. Thats just me and yes, I know Im showing bad behavior. But, im talking about schools. Down here in bama no one cares unless you have a gun. As I have stated many times I DONT NOT TRESPASS on priv property because 90% of the time some huge 300 lb dude with a mullet and tats all over comes over with a shotgun. And of my crazy ways of MDing like bringing the police scanner, camo MD etc. Just my style. But email is a great idea except for one draw back. Its ALOT easier to say no and give some fake reason why not over email than straight to their face. My 0.02
