GARRETT ACE 250 REVIEW

hi everybody

thakns to your reviews i become the owner of ace 250. Have used it maybe 10h for now. Found some old russian coins and II WW stuff. Still the sounds and identification is not clear to me yet. Seems very hard to detect an solid sound but so far i`m very pleased with it.
I`m mostly interested of relics. Here is the question: how much will the bigger Pro search coil increase the depth and overall values compare to the standard coil and the price the bigger coil costs. And does it affect finding smaller coins/stuff?

thanks
V.

HI
i am a high end detector user
i bought the ace 250 for a back for me and my girlfreind to go out togehter and detect (here 3rd time out maybe 3 hours of use she pegged a 1919 s wheat at 6 inchs she spanked me taht day with the oldest find >:( )
i was working a site that i have been digging for about 3 weeks (about 7 days total on weekends mostly)
i figured one day that id bring the ace along just for gigles to see what this little bad boy can do
first impression it was very talky as i had not notched anything but iron out
but with the presets and notching i notched out all sept coins
so i was swithing between machines running into iron nail piles
they would ring in as a coin for a moment then peg into the iron foil range
so just to be sure i was not hearing masked tones
i would pull up the other machine dig the hole and yep is iron hallow effect
usually most all the times it did this it was pegging at a depth of 8 lots of nail is this depth range
well as i made my way threw the area to rest the machine(ace )against a tree
i got a GOOD solid coin signal it was bouncing all over the coins id range but not into trash at all!!!
prolly a wheat penny i tell my self so i dig a 3 inch hole and hit a root at 2 inchs
still in the hole this time its pegging in the silver range
as i dig around the hole out poped this

it was at an 45 ' angle just below off the the side of the root was a shocker to say the least
2nd oldest coin i dug there so far (1883 v nickel with my troy X5 at 7 inchs)

hi all new to md'ing and new to this forum, i have had my detector for 2 months now (ace 250) and regulary go to the beach. been reading alot of posts about this so i thought i would share some of my experiences with you all, found that close to the water you put your sensitivity down to about 3 or 4 and hold the coil about a half inch to an inch above sand and this does just fine, as far as depth i found a 4 ounce sinker at about 12 inches this morning but i do use the 12 inch coil out on the beach and have found alot of stuff with the original coil hope this helps any questions for the ace on the beach. this is a great forum

I am used to Whites but because of the price I bought an Ace250. I have no problem getting good depth. I will use a pinpointer next time because I am having a trouble pinpointing. The biggest aggravation I am having is all the false signals. I will hear a beep but do not hear it when I sweep back. Repeated back and forth sweeps will produce a signal sometimes and sometimes not. What is wrong?

I obviously need more practice.

trash ;) try running it at 4-5 bars of sens the higher the sens.
the more falsing i get a iron signal thats old and deep will
if the sens. is juiced all the way up will read the halo
as a good target ;D

I have found that 99% of the time when a signal only hits in one direction it is usually trash and is often deeper than the machine says. Oh, there's something there alright but it is probably a rusted nail. So, you're not doing anything wrong, just the machine trying to communicate with you. Listen to it and back off your sensitivity a notch. Monty

I think I can live with the false signals. I felt that they were very deep and hard to sweep unless exactly over top. This explains it. I cant dig them because the signal is intermittent. Thanks Monty.

Another problem I am having is with Discrimination. I can tune out iron , but sometimes i will get good solid ringtone and the screen shows penny or dime while in the coin or jewelry mode, and I dig up a steel beer crown bottle cap. Why cant I tune out bottlecaps?

My machines all get fooled by bottle caps on occasion from the cheap Radio Shack 3300 to my Garrett GTI 2500. If they are steel, the rust causes the "halo effect" but most of the ones I dig up are aluminum. Technology hasn't figured a way to discriminate out aluminum...at least I don't know of any. And unfortunately its resistance falls into the coin/silver range. For now I guess it's just something we have to live with. However some detectorists claim they can distinguish the difference in the tone, but I can't. Monty

I wasnt referring to the aluminum twist offs. I realize that aluminum cans and bottle caps cannot be tuned out. I am referring to the STEEL CROWN CAPS. Can you tune them out?

I have tuned them out by discriminating out where ever they turn up on the LCD. Problem is they might turn up anywhere and often bounce all over the scale. They are a problem for nearly everyone. Monty

When I air bench test the bottle cap, the tone is silent. (discriminated)
When the same steel bottle cap is on the ground and I sweep over it, it often shows as a penny, dime, and occasionaly quarter, but could bounce all over the scale, like you say. In the 80's I had a TR disc unit. I dont remember having this problem with the TR. But it had no depth. I find the Ace has good depth.
As long as this is normal, I will get used to it.

I have been digging my "false" signals. And with the help of a pinpointer, I am finding that there is usually a TINY piece of aluminum or foil.

it doesnt surprise me that those tiny little beeps are turning out to be small pieces of foil. its kind of a double edged sword. the ace is a sensative machine which is good for finding small earrings and chains, but it also will pick up really small trash items as well. it sounds like you are starting to understand what your ace is telling you though. it took me a little time to really get to know the 250, but now that i do, i have grown to really like it. i have a feeling that soon you will be able to tell a nickel from a tab, small gold items from junk, ect. it just takes time. :)
