I believe someone had one of those on here a few months back.

Thanks. Do you have a link to the post or do you remember if it was IDed? Strange that my buddy and I both unearthed one of these today in two separate areas of a large lawn.

I will try and find it. Im not sure if it was IDed. It may have been for gunpowder.

In the old format, I would find it quickly but I dont like the "new" format or its searching process at all.

Thanks Bigcypresshunter!

One of the owners of this estate was apparently a big game hunter. The house was built in 1897, though there was Rev War activity in the area. I dug this item at atleast 10". I believe my buddy dug his a bit shallower. Thanks for any insight into these items. They appear to be made out of brass.

It reminded me of a shot dispenser and I think I posted this (found in my files). I also think I was incorrect lol. But I seem to remember someone made the ID.

Hi - mine doesn't have the little door on it, but I was wondering if perhaps a spring wasn't attached to the attachment lug on the bottom. With a 10x jeweler's loupe it appears that this lid has been turned on a lathe.

Erik, that is what they are....from shot (lead shotgun shot) socks
note the one in the middle. A small chain was attached to the eye so it would not be lost
They were not all with the "window. I have both examples in my collection.

Thanks kuger for the excellent ID and references! Any idea of the timeframe in which these would have been used (and lost)? The estate was built in 1897, but there was Rev War activity in the area prior to that. Any idea if this was a civilian or military item? It's odd that we found two of them on the same hunt. I have heard that US troops did camp around this area during the war, but so far I haven't found any Rev War related items that I'm aware of.

I think they were for the old cast iron tubs. They was a lever at the top of the drain trap and rod connected to it inside the drain that connected to the stopper shown.

..aside from how small these are,I could go with that...these are not threaded as would need be,on powder type implement

OK, now I'm officially confused :laughing7: So are we saying they are not from a "shot sock" because they are not threaded? I'll measure the exact diameter when I get home this evening, but I'd say it's roughly 3/4". If a tub stopper, would they have been used on plumbed in tubs or free standing to remove the water? Is it big enough to be a tub stopper...seems a bit on the small side, but I don't know what the old tubs were like. Approx what timeframe are we talking about RD?
