found 6 foot cross under black top! UPDATE!

my step dad was removing old black top at our cabin built in the late 1800's. came across this 6 foot cross pointing north.
looks like concrete blend of some sort with local stones and quarts in it. local mason says its not masonic. any ideas
!!UPDATE!! OK I HAD SOME FACTS VERY WRONG AND SOME NEW INFO. I MISSUNDERSTOOD DATE OF CABIN BEING BUILT
THE 1800'S DATE WAS FROM SOMETHING ELSE ON LAND. GOLD MINE COMPANY SOLD OFF PARTS OF THE LAND IN THE 60'S. 160 WAS OWNED BY THE CHEIF OF POLICE IN WALNUT CREEK AND BUILT THE CABIN IN 1965 WHO DIED LATER AND LAND WAS SPLIT AGAIN. NEW ALSO FOUND DIAMOND SHAPES AROUND IT AS WELL. CROSS HAS BEEN MOVED TO ANOTHER PART OF THE PROPERTY. DONT KNOW HOW FAR THEY WENT DOWN WHEN DIGGING IT UP. cross5.webpcross5.webp

Seems to me that folks often leave symbols of their faith along the way- no matter where they roam. And a mine- where-ever it is could be a very good place to have such a symbol. I don't think it's weird or strange or even out of place. It is interesting to figure out the 'by whom' and perhaps the why. It being covered by layers of one thing or another doesn't really matter (unless it's a scandal of some sort). Unless it's a holy property, it doesn't have to be documented. I tend to think that the fact that it was covered up has less to do w/ lack of a particular faith, but more an issue of appropriateness. Not everyone wants a cross, no matter how charming or beautiful, to be ____ fill in the blank- wherever.

That said, it's a really, really cool find- definitely a once in a lifetime discovery! It's really pretty and well designed. Wouldn't it be interesting if someone built a church around it (or moved it to a church as the center-piece of the naïve, for instance).
Thanks for showing it- Yakker
