found 6 foot cross under black top! UPDATE!

my step dad was removing old black top at our cabin built in the late 1800's. came across this 6 foot cross pointing north.
looks like concrete blend of some sort with local stones and quarts in it. local mason says its not masonic. any ideas
!!UPDATE!! OK I HAD SOME FACTS VERY WRONG AND SOME NEW INFO. I MISSUNDERSTOOD DATE OF CABIN BEING BUILT
THE 1800'S DATE WAS FROM SOMETHING ELSE ON LAND. GOLD MINE COMPANY SOLD OFF PARTS OF THE LAND IN THE 60'S. 160 WAS OWNED BY THE CHEIF OF POLICE IN WALNUT CREEK AND BUILT THE CABIN IN 1965 WHO DIED LATER AND LAND WAS SPLIT AGAIN. NEW ALSO FOUND DIAMOND SHAPES AROUND IT AS WELL. CROSS HAS BEEN MOVED TO ANOTHER PART OF THE PROPERTY. DONT KNOW HOW FAR THEY WENT DOWN WHEN DIGGING IT UP. cross5.webpcross5.webp

don't think any church would lay a cross on the ground. and there would have been very little around when the cabin was built . A old stage stop not that far away. the old mine shaft on the land is nw of cross about 300 ft away. the area is full of old mine shafts. the stone are healing stones of sorts

You know nothing about the cross but then again you do know things about the cross. You seem to know exactly what the 5 stones represent. Please elaborate on what you do know and what you are able to surmise based on your location and the history available to you..

I would have to disagree with that churches don't lay crosses on the ground. I've seen it on multiple occasions. This cross is obviously for that purpose alone.

On another note; At first I wanted to say before expanding your second picture that it was a paver design but coming into it closer what amazes me is that you said you had BLACK TOP asphalt?

So how did this cross NOT get any asphalt (black top) stuck to it without somehow defacing it?

I don't know. I'm no detective or archeologist but if you ask somebody's opinion don't tell us that "that can't be it" once again.....

Just my two cents.

I am perplexed as well. First it was reported to be under blacktop. When I noticed that it was basically at the same height as the undisturbed black top your answer was that it was under something that was covering the black top. Maybe concrete? I'm not sure. I really didn't understand your response.

Beyond all of that, I too am amazed at the lack of residue from either black top or concrete. It appears to be pristine. Did you clean it prior to taking the picture? What did you use?

I'd guess part of the original decor, before someone ripped up most of it, Or the weather destroyed the rest, so they redid with Black Top.

Cool though

Maybe even one of the owners was offended by the cross, But
for some reason it was easier to cover then remove

ok as stated before 3-4 inch concrete over blacktop. please if you can show example of a church laying a cross on the ground. I know the stones are local to the area. I know it points north. I know the cabin was built in the late 1800's. I know it is along the carson pass/ pioneer trail. I know its not masonic. if I had to guess I would say it was laid sometime from the 20's-60's just a guess since it looks like it was formed. what I am trying to find is something like it for a clue why. could be as simple as a décor for the driveway. just a hope someone has seen something like it before. Its not close to home so I wont be back till this summer to do more looking. and I did not say THATS NOT IT I said I did not (think) a church would do that. WHICH MEANS I COULD BE WRONG. thanks for all the input now I have some ideas how to try and find out more.

I don't mean to come off as being a:censored: but you did want to see some crosses on the grounds of a church. Right?

Nice thank you do you know where that big cross is. The other looks like at a house do you know the state or local of that. Big cross look like it on a slanted hill
the other is flat for sure. I am leaning towards someone just put it there for looks. And idea of someone being offended by it and covering it up. I am going to do some digging around this spring/summer. And follow any clue I might get here.

The large cross is from Massachusetts and the other in Georgia.

In my opinion this thing is a sealed and solved mystery. A mosaic piece of art made in to a cross with concrete and different colored pebbles. It gave me some ideas on making a cool patio slab.

If theres old mines in the area it may be a tribute to victims of a mining accident, etc.

I would love to see pictures of the diamonds. I agree it is all likely a folk art mosaic patio or walkway. However, I am intrigued by what appears to be signifigant thickness under the mosaic. What did you find underneath when you moved the cross? Okay, I just saw the pictures of the diamonds added to the original post. Does look like a cool mosaic patio, that was covered over. Maybe you can unearth the whole thing and bring it back to life.
