found 6 foot cross under black top! UPDATE!

my step dad was removing old black top at our cabin built in the late 1800's. came across this 6 foot cross pointing north.
looks like concrete blend of some sort with local stones and quarts in it. local mason says its not masonic. any ideas
!!UPDATE!! OK I HAD SOME FACTS VERY WRONG AND SOME NEW INFO. I MISSUNDERSTOOD DATE OF CABIN BEING BUILT
THE 1800'S DATE WAS FROM SOMETHING ELSE ON LAND. GOLD MINE COMPANY SOLD OFF PARTS OF THE LAND IN THE 60'S. 160 WAS OWNED BY THE CHEIF OF POLICE IN WALNUT CREEK AND BUILT THE CABIN IN 1965 WHO DIED LATER AND LAND WAS SPLIT AGAIN. NEW ALSO FOUND DIAMOND SHAPES AROUND IT AS WELL. CROSS HAS BEEN MOVED TO ANOTHER PART OF THE PROPERTY. DONT KNOW HOW FAR THEY WENT DOWN WHEN DIGGING IT UP. cross5.webpcross5.webp

To me it looks like someone's color stone pebble mosaic art work. Maybe done to bless the home or driveway? Could be a time capsule under it???
You can buy bags of color rock like that and a bag of cement to make a mosaic like it in walmarts lawn and garden department. Lucky you didn't start over that spot in demolition with a jack hammer.

In most construction of buildings today and years ago foundations are laid out in a north, south, east, west direction. If that makes sense. So if the cross was lined up with the front door and the house was surveyed to face south.. That might explain why its pointing or laying in a true north direction. My guess is that it was part of a decorative walkway.

interesting, now you have to stand outside during the solstis and tell us what you see.

An aspect of the cross that interests me are the five stones in its center. Could it be a clue to its meaning?

Just looked it up and they are symbolic of the five wounds of Christ.

Nice work. If you're able to find just what sort of christian faith that cross design is attributed to you could learn a lot about what it was for, time period and the exact denomination.

I think it was put there by the former home/cabin builder, like others have said, a decorative mosaic walkway/entrance,. A pointed cross like that is referred to as a passion cross or carpenters cross I believe.

I have yet to find a cross that has points like that all four. passion or carpenter cross is flat on top. I think the five stones are called fire stones

Does the former owner know when the blacktop was done? To me it looks like someone's mosaic art work (as other's have mentioned) and definitely was done in a form.
Looks more modern then what the date of the cabin is.

Also, how long did the former owner own the cabin? It could have been placed there (as part of a stepping stone/walk) by the owners before him. Then they
decided to go with blacktop, and the thing being too heavy to move, they blacktop over it.

Good mystery though! Yeah, try to see if anything is under it.

Passion Cross

The second example shows four points. The upper three short members of the Passion Cross represent the three nails, and the lower pointed stem represents the spear that pierced Jesus' side.

you said it pointed true north....maybe whoever made it just want a decorative piece that pointed to the four cardinal headings. Just a compass rose? cutcaster-photo-100229408-Compass-rose.webp

I would do a couple of things, first I would keep digging in the area to see if anything else comes up. Second, I would walk each direction of the points for at least 500-1000ft if possible. If nothing comes up then get out a map and turn it into a couple of miles and see if it comes arcoss any markers. I've never heard of anything like this so I don't think its an "x" marks the spot. I think its a marker and it means something.

I know for a fact the reason for the 5 stones in the center resemble the five wounds that Christ took for us per the bible.
Personally, I don't think it's a lead on any treasure. Nor do I believe that it's where a pet was buried either. I think it's nothing more than for decorative/religious meaning to the former owner(s).
My only other suggestion is to find some information at the local library or city hall and trace back who lived there and what he/she did for a job. Or check old plat maps to see if your cabin isn't converted from a existing church?
