found 6 foot cross under black top! UPDATE!

my step dad was removing old black top at our cabin built in the late 1800's. came across this 6 foot cross pointing north.
looks like concrete blend of some sort with local stones and quarts in it. local mason says its not masonic. any ideas
!!UPDATE!! OK I HAD SOME FACTS VERY WRONG AND SOME NEW INFO. I MISSUNDERSTOOD DATE OF CABIN BEING BUILT
THE 1800'S DATE WAS FROM SOMETHING ELSE ON LAND. GOLD MINE COMPANY SOLD OFF PARTS OF THE LAND IN THE 60'S. 160 WAS OWNED BY THE CHEIF OF POLICE IN WALNUT CREEK AND BUILT THE CABIN IN 1965 WHO DIED LATER AND LAND WAS SPLIT AGAIN. NEW ALSO FOUND DIAMOND SHAPES AROUND IT AS WELL. CROSS HAS BEEN MOVED TO ANOTHER PART OF THE PROPERTY. DONT KNOW HOW FAR THEY WENT DOWN WHEN DIGGING IT UP. cross5.webpcross5.webp

don't know what came first cabin or cross. if cabin was first it would be a strange place to bury a pet at you front door

Almost looks like a lid....did you look underneath?

Can you ask the former owner?

Possibly the start of a fancy tiled parking area years ago that just got paced over.:dontknow:.....Let us know.

did not look under it is very thick and did not want to break it. former owner had no idea it was there. it is pointing true north. there is a old mine shaft on the land that has been covered over with debris and trash.

clue and or question Why would the cross be laid out. A cross is to be displayed vertical is my understanding. May be wrong could you give examples of a laid out cross

Could there have been a Church or mission on the site a long time ago? Its possible it was used inside the church by the alter. Or moved to the location from another church nearby. It is generally true a cross isn't used on the floor, but not unheard of. My guess is it was rescued from a church and was part of a wall mosiac. Not sure why it would have been buried. The cross design looks more modern to me though with the angled ends. Head scratcher for sure!

no record of church or mission on site. block part is a least six inch thick did not go deeper to see how thick don't think it was ever standing up way to heavy

Lines up dead center with your door...part of a previous walkway...like you said, it would be a strange place for anything else.

Is there a local historical society? Ask the local librarian if there is someone who might know about the older houses in the area. It certainly wasn't a secret, being so large and right outside the front door, so it must have been known, commented on before it was paved over. Very interesting.

It could be the septic tank cover? it looks to have been cast in a mold. HH

The odd thing is that it looks to be the exact height as some of the undisturbed blacktop to the left.
