lions mane is a safe one , nothing else looks like it . these get huge too , I picked one a couple of years ago the size of a soccer ball .Morels are all that I feel confident in picking for my consumption. A few more weeks here, and they’ll be popping. A lady friend picks oyster mushrooms. They are delicious, but I can’t identify them well enough.
I got a lot of cottontails around here.this little guy was laying next to my garden gate , still very wobbly on his feet , this is part of my forest food bankView attachment 2086037 and the rabbits are everywhere.View attachment 2086038
The name certainly isn’t appetizing. It must be like Smucker’s jam: “with a name like that, it has to be good.”today while in the forest I found a mushroom called Black Staining Polypore . very good eating deep fried .View attachment 2093225

With all the rain we've had this summer the mushrooms are doing very well in my forest.
I went out today and picked some Black Trumpets ,many small ones to be picked in the days to come.View attachment 1859071
way better than bland store bought Mushrooms.
Do any of you forage for wild edibles ? it's a great hobby to go along with relic hunting frim
in south La, however I can tell you
Never considered that tic. I know that mushrooms grow like crazy in south La, just don’t know what kind. I know one thing, I cooked in restaurants for a good part of my life, and this one I remember a duck dish that incorporated trumpets. They were not cheap. Thanks for the idea. With all the rain we've had this summer the mushrooms are doing very well in my forest.

eating wild foods is like crossing the road , you have to learn to do it safely. not knowing what to eat in the wild could be deadly in itself.I'm too young to die
True. But then again, all cultivated crops started off as a wild food that was gathered. You just have to learn what's what. That knowledge used to be common knowledge with our ancient ancestors, but we "grew out of it", so now we have to re-learn what we forgot. There are. very few wild foods that I gather and eat, and I love them all, and enjoy them without fear. But if it's something tempting that isn't on my list, I just leave it right where I found it.eating wild foods is like crossing the road , you have to learn to do it safely. not knowing what to eat in the wild could be deadly in itself.
If you eat pepperoni and salami you are playing the same kind of roulette. Heavily processed and nitrated meats are killers.I'm too young to die
