Fish pics ( everybody )

No pics today (winter here in Michigan) so I'm going with a fishing buddy to Cabela's and taking another fishing buddy to get him equipped to fish salmon using a heavy flyrod. Always fun helping to spend someone's money!

One of my favorite things to do.......shopping for tackle with my bosses money. Of course I'm gonna have to have a grouper Reuben sandwich after a long morning of shopping for tackle. I always tell the boss " wooo weee, what a long day, we got a lot done today" lol. Have fun SD51 !!

Catching some yellowfins lately. Trying to break out of a bad slump, things have been slow for us. I hooked and handed 8 tunas off to my anglers. 2 the sharks got, 2 we landed and 4 got away. My anglers are not that experienced so it gets frustrating.

20190302_180333.jpg now that's a nice one. 50 - 60 pound yellowfin. Man that sucks, some pics just won't rotate.

That's better.

Too cold here to go fishing (not into ice fishing) so I decided to refinish a bamboo flyrod that was my grandfathers. The rod is 3 piece and is 7' 9" long and has two tip sections. I plan to have it ready for our annual trout flyfishing trip to the Wisconsin Driftless area this Spring.

I removed all the old guides, cork handle and reel seat and removed the old varnish. The metal ferrules were cracked so I ordered new nickel silver ferrules and turned the bamboo down to fit the new ferrules using my lathe. I used a foam brush to apply three coats of spar varnish to the bamboo before attaching the ferrules, a new cork handle and an exotic wood (Amboyna) reel seat with nickel silver components.

I marked the location of the new guides using masking tape and will use red silk thread to attach the guides. Still haven't received the new guides but here's some pics of the rod so far...

The flyrod was probably made in the 1940s or 50s and it will be as good as new when it's completed. I also found some feathers I received from my grandfather that I will use to make some flies. Can't wait to try it out to honor my grandfather. I'll post a video using the rod when I get back from the trip this Spring.

Wow....that's a great job SD. I think your gramps would be very proud to see the amount of time and effort that you put into that restoration. Probably looks better than it did when he purchased it. Cant wait to see a fish that gets caught on it. Great work SD !! looks awsome.
