Hello to all my first post and hopefully some closure.Long story on this one I will explain if this can be identified. It is marked on brass from Wilmington Delaware estate I would imagine this marking appears on many detecting finds as well.Colonial origin 18th century or older. The other image is forged on the end of a 18th century fishing hook appears like old map art of British Isles or French fur trade no idea.I need help big time on these for provenance of my items. 11hb.jpg

Ok...I have read enough...
First off in my opinion... WHATEVER IT IS...
#1. I do not believe that is a mark of ANY kind...
#2. Whatever it is... looks like a copy by the craftsmanship to me.

Again
My trade axe... heh.

I was going to mention what looks like file marks next to the brass pin that holds the brass part to the wooden shaft. You know, like you would find on a cheaply made reproduction of something old made to sell to the tourists in Mexico... But I kept it to myself because he's already mad at me... It also appears to have been shellacked at some point but who knows. He won't show us the whole thing.

give our newbies some respect

How about some better photos. Like showing what the items are. Why so cryptic? I love trying to ID things but throw me a bone here. Thanks

OK.. I will play nice. But I agree with Peachy. Why can't we see what the entire brass & wood item is and how do you explain the obvious file marks and what appears to be shellac ? Waiting....

ok bob,
I do want to help, you are not helping me help.read this please
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/136849-please-read-before-posting-items-what.html
also understand that we are just treasure addicts like you,we do however participate in the webs most sucessful treasure finds id forum.many of us for years and we have been quite able at this task.

you may be hard pressed to find a new member grilled as hard as you have been, but know you have thrown out every imaginable red flag that we encounter.
1)either never read or disreguard above link
2)photo of hook traced to a private collection, not your photo.reprinted in black and white
from a format that was far easier to see detail from.
3)unwilling or unable to give us complete photos or even a complete description of item(thats
a new one for me)
4)tell us we must have inferior equipment or we would clearly see,"it"
5)mention the college professor you have access to who could actually inspect items and I
assume has some knowelege in the area.(why ask here then)
6)brass item appears to be shellaced wood,I have never seen any brass look anything like that.I can even see splintering.rasp marks are not from a fine file.

what you may not know is that there are some wierdos out there who think its fun to try and trick or test us with behaviour very familiar to yours so far.So maybe understand why you were being played with a bit.

easy fix.........do it right this time(read all above twice first if needed)and some of us would be quite willing to spend our leisure time welcoming you and doing research on your behalf...otherwise..well...no go for me.I'm out

Yes brass and wood.Yeah my bad for assuming.I thought this an easy one.I attached my screen shot on my phone I sent these to.All butt cap shots I just was not thinking. The Ron Lucas hook Big deal you guys can argue that all you want I did not buy it and the moderator saw the email exchange with Lucas but that image is real.I will show how those stampings work as far as dates later. The lucas hook looks 1777,My rod has a older date.Plus my rod is stamped with letters. You guys know your ABC's.Most likely Hudson Bay. Ebay leeches I am aware of.They don't bother me.Not much does. And that list you gave me for info I am just going to make this quick being if you really feel I need to be interrogated that just does not sit right.I never was treated guilty first and never found to be guilty as an end result.I am very honest and respectful of others.I even try to analyse the person who sends cartoons and silly images.I do not think you would like my analyses.LOL HAHA. Most likely it is a fur trade marking and it will take a while because there are so many marks but I will add pics of the whole item.I will go to the storage area and take more pics.I did shoot a pic outside I sent to my buddy he said it looks to be amber and real amber varnish was used 1600s mostly and early 1700s.I have some pretty cool finds I would like to share and I will.I would imagine the respect level will get better through time when you realize I am straight up.I really do not feel like a newbie I know this history well just another group of guys I wanted to chat with and pick minds. But it is what it is.Thanks.Bob

I think I can see what Bob is referring to.

unfortunately if it is markings like you believe,
it's going to take someone who actually recognizes that particular mark.

I do agree with bigfoot1 also, we need more photos information if possible.
photos of the entire items and Dimensions may actually help also.
as Someone may see the item and recognize it.
If you can't get more complete photos please advise so we know we are
wasting time asking.

I agree some of the members need to get serious so I can stop deleting there posts,
because sooner or later I am going to Tire of warnings and show them I mean Business.
Hopefully they don't drive me to that :unhappysmiley:

as far as I'm concerned you have proven yourself too be a legit member,
and am enjoying your posts !

The fog is beginning to slowly clear... Is the Brass thing the butt cap to a fishing rod ? If so is there some logical reason it took 3 pages to find that out ? We all like a mystery. Just look at how many people post on the Superstition mountains, KGC, Free Masons, etc. But... when you come here asking for help we shouldn't have to begin by trying to guess what the hell the objects are you're showing us... So.... is the brass and wood "thing" a fishing rod ? You can tell us, we can keep a secret..

In this photo I do see a raised mark (circled in red), but I am sorry to say that the rest does look like either corrosion, or years worth of dried dirt.

thanks for reply bob,I never would have guessed fishing rod.the amber varnish I'm sure would confirm its age.while a destructive test it needs only a tiny specimen to determine if venetian, german etc.I have no opinion to give on hook as the raised area in question has no meaning to me.prolly the proffesor can help more.the mark on the butt cap is the same story.perhaps only an expert in the field would recognise as simple google searches have little to no hope of sucess.

welcome and let us know how it works out, certainly a new and interesting relic direction for me.:occasion14:
edit;I just recieved email from ronn on hook.he looked closely and stated this."I couldn’t help him with the brass piece. The other item, a fish hook I can help a bit. Since it is my hook and I just took a good close look at it and there is no way that area represents a map of anywhere! It looks to be an area where a bit of rust fell off of it. Nothing more."

this would indicate that the "raised"area is actually a depression.photos are funny that way as you know.nothing better than in hand inspection.I have run out of any ability to help out at this point as I just dont have the knowelege to do so.good luck and again..welcome

To see more of the wood of the pole would help as well. Lancewood, greenheart, cane, mahogany, hickory, elm, etc.

Whether it has any accommodation for a spool, reel, line cleat or pegs, guides, tip fitting, ferrules, etc.

If we get this one detail at a time it may be trout season before we have a full idea of the rod. ;-)

The rod pics I will add soon tonight I if not soon after.I am going up that way shortly being we are in Florida Temperature controlled storage is a must due to humidity and mold.I can keep it here for weeks now being it is not rainy season..I cleaned up the hook early this AM and this will be posted on here FOR THE LAST TIME to save you all from the eye strain who took the time to look. Believe me I want to go inside ronns site through my laptop and reach in with a toothpick and push some of that rust off.I really would like to buy that hook if I could identify it,$150 is steep for a hook but if it is the only one and I can ID it I would buy it and I just may. This is a uncompressed file and takes up a lot of space .I will delete it after you all take a look.I also attached a link of old map art.I was hoping I could match hook to a province with an old map.Almost 1 month spent on this stupid hook of and on.I walked away from if for a week or two but it really has peaked my interest.

Do I understand this correctly? You have an 18th century or earlier fishing rod handle? And you see a map on the end of a fish hook? Is this correct?

as you know the hook was found at a fur trade site.is there any manifests of other written way to refine possibilities?it is no doubt a 1700s hook from the expert who owns it.
