Hello to all my first post and hopefully some closure.Long story on this one I will explain if this can be identified. It is marked on brass from Wilmington Delaware estate I would imagine this marking appears on many detecting finds as well.Colonial origin 18th century or older. The other image is forged on the end of a 18th century fishing hook appears like old map art of British Isles or French fur trade no idea.I need help big time on these for provenance of my items. 11hb.jpg

not sure whats up with your post, but here is your top item,as you know,a fish hook found in nw michigan.I actually mean here is "your"item...hook 1.jpgas found at Ronn Lucas Sr scroll way down.

compare to photo you provided..11hb.jpg..there are no markings other that wear or environmental damage that I can discerne.

Sure are some "odd" first posts around here lately... Just sayin How about a picture of the entire item that's shown in the bottom 2 pictures ? Material it's made of, etc. Is it a closeup of what appears to be a stain on a powder horn or something of that nature ? Will there be balloons & cake if someone is able to guess correctly from a couple of horrible pictures and NO description ?

any chance you would share a photo of the complete brass item?if it is an intentional mark,it would help greatly to know what the item is and what is its size...thanks

bandit..we posting at the same time wondering the same thing.I still cant figure out why post a photo from the internet of an item described as"my items"

Confused now

Geez I thought for sure you guys would know. The jokes are ok if your display lacks resolution. We are dating these for historical society. We suspect them to be province marks it is almost impossible to have anyone give opinion if your using a cheap laptop or anything less than 1080p.We use use high resolution imaging.High resolution projectors used at college are not in most homes but a newer smart phone or ipad with a retinal display really will get the job done. The scratches are humorous you guys nailed it fairly well being Indians had written in that manner as well. The items seems to have been bartered possibly. What does the cat with the violin mean the Indians had meaning to their figures?LOL..Anyway here are some images I will try again.Ron Lucas hook is a few inches and he is selling it for not cheap so I need to know what it is.That is a province mark with unknown writing. There is a date in the middle circles. It seems impossible to show these on the internet. They are verified as some type of province mark not a hallmark.Looks to be 1700s since I saw these before but I can not recall where.I thought on a dig in the old Spaniard forge New Mexico but I can not remember. The axe is just an example of fur trade marks. There are so many I may never know exactly what that mark is.Collecting-FurTrade-TradeAxe-Squaw-Img92.JPGIMG_9622.JPGIMG_9623.JPGIMG_9624.JPGFullSizeRender (19).jpg

I tried to clean up the mark you can see the letter H above. It may have been in Hudson bay area as with the hook.We do a lot of forensics with photos I can add better detail when I meet the professor who is helping me.nn(1).jpg

Bob if that's your real name... I think the issue here is that you're the only one who sees anything on your objects. We are a helpful bunch but a bit skeptical as well when a newbie shows up with something of this nature. Help us out here. If it's not rust what is it ? It certainly looks like some form of corrosion but you're not giving us much to go on other than a few pictures that don't show much. Oh yeah, welcome & all that happy stuff.

lol HNB.
IMO when someone post obscure desigens it turns into a Rorschach ink blot test, just saying.

ok so your insisting that the crusty stuff on the fish hook picture is not some form of rust or corrosion... Willing to "bet" on it even. What is it then ? You'll have us believe that it's some sort of man made "marking" ? Seriously ? I'm honestly not looking for an argument or to discredit you but give us a little more info than some pictures and a link to a site that may or may not have anything at all to do with what you're showing us. And I agree that the brass & wood item is interesting but you're refusing to show us the whole thing or tell us what it is.

Ok...I have read enough...
First off in my opinion... WHATEVER IT IS...
#1. I do not believe that is a mark of ANY kind...
#2. Whatever it is... looks like a copy by the craftsmanship to me.

Again
My trade axe... heh.
