First Beach Hunt with the Equinox 600

Thanks Terry for the good honest, review.

Thanks Terry for the good honest, review.

I agree, this is the stuff many have been waiting for, real reviews from members who really know their detecting. So far, so good. Look forward to more feedback from Terry and others.

Thanks for the review Terry! Being another LI/NY hunter is good to hear that the EQ did as well as we were anticipating it to do and to find a Merc on Field 4...NICE! For those of you that are not from here Jones Beach is hunted by many year after year so that is definitely an encouraging find and your review makes me glad I pulled the trigger on one. The wait for its arrival is driving me up a wall though. Thanks again Terry!

Happy Hunting

Terry, just imagine how well you will do
when you really understand the Equinox
and start digging really deep targets.
Nice job on the finds!

Hey Terry how do you find the stock headphones? I see they don't have a waterproof connector.. I wish they'd at least have put the connector on there so you could use it in the surf (keeping head above water).

I don't like the headphones. They sound great But - I just don't think they will stand up to the banging around and heavy use like my Killer B's. I'm too old to be neck deep in the Atlantic anymore, so knee-hip deep is as far as I'm going for the most part. The speaker is loud enough to hear over wind and waves though. :skullflag:

Great first run, Terry. Makes the wait even harder.

Did you run into any bottle/crown caps?

Yes! I purposely hunted some very trashy areas, and had no problem simply relying on tones to tell me what was there, then I would check the numbers. Depending on the depth, rust, or foil on the cap, 13-16 VDI, but the tones really talk to you! :skullflag:

I am not going to stop being a Tesoro Cult Member, but I will be replacing several Tesoro machines with the one Minelab. With the Equinox 600, I don't need my Tiger Shark; Sand Shark; Tejon; or Vaquero. I know that sounds blasphemous coming from me, but I honestly feel the 600 can do everything these machines do - and more. I'll keep my Mojave and Vaquero as backup, and loaner's, but they are officially "closet queens" after yesterday.

Of course I still have my Lobo Super Traq for nugget hunting, as well as my GPZ 7000. I honestly believe the Equinox is the start of an exciting time in our hobby, priced so that most can afford one. Now let's see how the battery and machine hold up under heavy use. That will be the deciding factor. :skullflag:

Terry giving up his sand shark?..lol, I never thought I would ever see those words. Great review! I think a 600 will be my next detector too. Thanks Terry!

Terry, do you go somewhere to dig that has nuggets? Did you take it out today? Going this weekend?

I'm taking my Cibola out tomorrow assuming it doesn't rain. It does not feel loved at the moment.

Yes. Weaver and Bradshaw mountains in central Arizona. I also travel up to Gold Basin, north of Kingman, every now and then for gold and meteorites. Was not out today, but will be out tomorrow and Saturday.:skullflag:

Good luck and keep us enlightened on the EQ600 as I hope to have my own very soon.

Terry, thanks for the info on the headphones. Which tone mode did you find most useful on the beach, 3, 5 or 50 tones? The 50 tone mode sounds like it would be great when you can't easily see the display (water hunting, or stealthy night hunts with display off).

Thanks again for the review

Three-tone is my favorite. In the water there is a lot less trash as you know, so I'm not sure 50 would be any better than 3. With that said, the 50-tone may be the secret to discriminating out pull-tabs! :icon_thumright:

If you found a 46 Merc you’d better hang on to that thing Terry! Look again....sounds like it’s working well!

He said he found a silver 1946 dime, not a 1946 Mercury dime. I'm pretty sure Terry would not claim finding a dime that didn't exist.

It was MY mistake George! It was a '45 Merc. My eyes ain't what they used to be! :occasion14:

The specs on Minelab web site says 1,2,5 and 50 tones...is that wrong? they don't show a 3 tone mode.

Terry - Please do not hit Silver Sands before I get to try my 800 (waiting for backorder) - LOL.

Hi Terry. If you get a chance to try the discrimination on pull tabs lets say beach mode 2 . Run the detector over a few different pull tabs and use the discrimination talked about on page 49 of the manual . Then take a few rings along to see if they are discriminated out. I would not think all gold rings would be discriminated out.
