Before the FBI (or anybody else) could remove gold from that site, first somebody had to put gold into it.
Where did this gold come from?
The most common "explanation" seems to be a US Army payroll from the Civil War. That makes no sense. I don't think there has been an army in the history of the world that paid soldiers in gold bars. Where the soldiers supposed to take a camp axe and hack off what they were owed for the month?
The Union Army was largely paid in paper. Many soldiers had money sent home to their wives and family.
Until someone can document the source for the gold in this yarn, there's little purpose in worrying about what happened to it.
