Let us vote it banner if desired. The makers mark goes far for provenance and Guy is no stranger to the fur trade era in finds.
I'd still be shocked to make such a recovery.
Trade silver is rare enough even without a large intact specimen.
I vote banner.

I'm in. I second..... Banner worthy! Great find there!

Guy,

wtg....definitely a banner worthy find...you have my vote.

I voted last night when I saw it. It does not get much exposure here it deserves but with the hallmark and history it is a worthy item.Nice job cleaning it to!

So it would be around 1782 when he made it?

Very impressive find!

TN,

So true about the provenance.....one of the major museums here in Montreal that has a large selection of silver fur trade items have very few items with a maker's mark.....given the size and elaborate design odds are good it would have belonged to a tribal chief at the time.

Folks,

Here's a link for the fur trade silver items at the McCord Museum in Montreal....you will note almost all their items don't have a maker's mark....just adds credence to why this item should go up top.

This is an amazing piece. I googled the information in this thread because I know very little about this subject. It will be unbelievably sad, really unjust in my opinion, if it doesn't make Banner.

That is absolutely a phenomenal piece of silver.. it's right in every respect, and worth a tidy sum.

I once briefly owned an R. Cruikshank Gorget that was one of the most beautiful pieces of early silver I have ever handled.

You are a very fortunate man.

Doubter,

Definitely banner worthy without a doubt.

Wow Guy, I just saw this now.
MAGNIFIQUE!!!! :o
Star brooches of this size were almost always cut up into pieces, as the star points were made into tassels or pendants.
What is the diameter in centimeters?

Voting banner on a fur trade item is like pulling teeth, so maybe this will help......
The brooch would easily fetch over a $1,000 and is BIG SILVER! Marked by the kingpin of all Montreal silversmiths.....RC!
Valuation is tough because most fur trade collectors are bidding on fake crap and haven't seen a REAL brooch like this in years!

INCREDULE! BANNER!!!!
Congrats Guy!

If this is not posted on today's finds it should be. There is not even a doubt whether this should be on the banner.
