I have been buying and selling antiquities on and off for many years but Im no expert on cobs and I dont buy them. You really need to know what you are doing. Its amazing the replicas and fakes on the market.

What kind of antiquities do you specialize in? Another period collectible I like is Spanish colonial religious medals and crucifixes.

I also have a fairly large collection of United Confederate Reunion (UCV) medals, pins, and ribbons.

I dont specialize in anything particular. I have boxes of antique tools in my warehouse (mostly Stanley) that I didnt finish selling on eBay. I also have bottles and coins not for sale. Im always looking for a bargain.

A little "replica" corrosion to make it look like authentic Atocha....

Assayer P (unknown), from comparison of the shield and the simple castle style with other pics, I believe this to be mid 1640's....

Too bad "good" in this case doesn't mean as good as the ones pictured on the front of the book. The heck with making a mount, I'll just solder a loop on....

I wish this one would sell, I'm sick of seeing it. No, it wasn't from some beach in the keys. I'll bet its from the Consolación (“Isla de Muerto shipwreck”), sunk in 1681 off Santa Clara Island, Ecuador:

Another soldered on loop, but might be fun to wear if on a budget....

Take a look at this coin. I believe it's a copy, and is marked as such. The seller says the coin is marked "COAY."

http://cgi.ebay.com/Atocha-Treasure...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2ea9ce0f0e

That's great, I missed that one. Here is a question he just answered on the post...

"Q: hello,i all so am not an expert on these coins, but i would like to know more about your listing.if you would please tell me can you make out any numbers on this coin, and would you tell me pompeard to a u.s. coin what would be its size.also the pic,s are very por can you try to list better ones.thank you Dec-12-09

A: I can not see any numbers. I see some letters that look like COAY or Co9Y not positive what these letters are. I do not have a great camera I did my best with pictures. Coin is about l 1/2 inches wide across the width"

Update from seller of coin stamped "copy":

> Dear *divewrecks*,

> the water. How could this get in the water, and if it is a reproduction
> does it have any value. I am a senior lady and will not be disonest. Please
> advise. thank you

I tried to let her down easy....
Stan

Did you tell her Stan that the real ones are silver and not plastic with words COAY. :D

From the guy selling a silver copy of the gold coin:

"Thank you Stan...I see by your contact name you must know about wrecks...I
took my 1713 coin off the market...yours was the second e-mail I received
saying it was not a real coin... If you could help me out...is this a
modern day counterfeit? Did the store in the keys just manufacture
it?"

Pretty good. We got two down in a day!

There are no bids on this cob. It this one of those unusual Potosi's? Waves look good. Nice worn edges.

I copied and Pasted this list from eBay .

By a royal statute decreed during the reign of King Charles I of Spain, the official weights of silver reales were--alas, many coins never came close to these official numbers.

8 reales (cob) = 27.3 grams [0.96 ounces]
4 reales (cob) = 13.65 grams [0.48 ounces]
2 reales (cob) = 6.82 grams [0.24 ounces]
1 real (cob) = 3.41 grams [0.12 ounces]
½ real (cob) = 1.71 grams [0.06 ounces]
