DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATED 2012

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

Coming back in saw a pile of 2X4s asked the guy if I could pull them out of the dumper. No problem. While I was loading up he asked if I wanted a couple of boxes of electric stuff. He toted out two big boxes of conduit connectors recepticles switches & wire & stuff. More than enough to rewire half the house. The wire alone would probably pay for this weekends trip as scrap! Right place right time for once!

Hey Y'all, I love this subject!! When I was little, my papaw lived in South Carolina. We would see them every couple years or so. Every time we went there we would visit the town dump....toys,bikes,comics galore. One time paps brought home 6 or 8 "TOMATO" plants, turns out they weren't tomato plants at all LOL. My Uncle quickly ....made them disappear....wink,wink. I still grab anything I, or someone I know, can use. To this day I cannot believe how many useful things people just throw away. HH, NEAL

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

Years back I followed a guy in pickup with a wooden framed kayak on his roof-rack heading for the dump...followed him in and transferred it to my truck (against the law to salvage in Orange County dumps) and went home smiling about this great coup...got a few choice words (will translate later) from my now ex ;D

Kept it for a few years with the best intentions of stretching new canvas siding...Oh well...I think my ex got it as a part of the property settlement :tongue3:

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

In case no one has mentioned it before. A GREAT place to find good stuff is military housing areas. I currently work for Navy Housing and you would never believe the things our soldiers and sailors throw out. These great men and women who serve our country get moved every few years. Moving day is always "get rid of stuff you don't want to move again day". I could not even begin to tell you the stuff my co-workers and I have found. Furniture, tools, lawn equipment, guns (always turned over to law enforcement), art, collectables, kids toys, bicycles.......... And on and on. As they say one mans trashis another mans treasure.

On another note the best finds from years past. My father got an old porcelin stove, a 1960 mercedes sedan back in '89. I got 2 jars full of tokens from the 1939 Worlds Fair in San Fran. still have em don't know if they are worth anything as I have never had luck finding info on them.

Was that Coyote Canyon? Fun place! Remember exiting with more than I entered with. Used to hand the guys in the vests $5 to shut up. They were from a temp service used by the County, think $5 was an hours pay for em!

When I was a young pup, there was a lady a couple of doors down from my grandmas that had a hedge along her driveway. These lots were half a block deep, the hedge ran the depth of the lot & was about 6' tall! Seems the local kids were vandalizing her hedge so she got mad & called the cops. Needless to say they pissed her off when they removed ALL her hedge. Yup, you guessed it! Some of the best Columbian Tomato plants you ever saw! ;D

And remember getting hauled out of Agriculture class to open our greenhouse project, because the Aralia Eligitisima plants we were growing looked like pot through the hardwater gunk on the glass.

NOPE Key words PRIVATE PROPERTY. Easiest & safest way is to get permission from the property owner. Without it you're trespassing, and if you remove anything from the building/s you can be charged with vandalism. Get a release of liability show it to the property owner & ask permission. Also, in some areas the demo crew legally can't give you permission. If you get permission, there's usually a bounty of goodies.

What does this have to do with finding stuff in the garbage?
Abondoned house = trash + junked materials etc. Why do you ask?

I have stuff stored in a modern storage facility. When someone doesnt pay the bill they give them 2 mos. to catch it up, if they dont then they auction off whats in the storage room. What ever is left they throw in a dumpster there. There is no food garbage and the likes, so I check it when I go there. I have found numerous things there. Once found a bag full of Levis jeans that still had the tags on them. Brand new!
Out of about 20 pair 15 or so were my size. The rest I gave to my stepson. I'm not ashamed, lol. Have also found CD players, books, magazines ect . :P

Ashamed?!?! Why in the heck would you even think about being ashamed!?!?! We're all recycling, basically doing what humans strive for, getting something for nothing. If you listen to the Greenies, you're a hero! Cleaning up the world recycling, and saving precious resources. How's it feel to be a hero! ;D ;D ;D

The neighbor behind me a couple of years ago threw out most of his Christmas lights including about 4 sets of lighted 4 ft candy canes.

Most of the light strings didn't work but were easily fixed.

He just buys new ones every year and throws them out in January after taking them down.

Aluminum,Copper and brass

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

metals. Books & magazines to dealers. The rest to the swap meet or drive way sale. With the metal prices where they are, more & more is going to the scrap yard. More $ less work.

Anyone hear the joke. Do you know the difference between a yard sale & trash? The distance to the curb ;D

I found some blocks of industrial grade rubber once. I took some to McCreary tire and rubber company and they said they would give me .10cents for each block. Each block was about 3" X 3" X 5". I was happy with that. I went home to get my truck, went back for the rest of them. Let me see............ 10cents times times a little over 8000 pieces of rubber equals a very nice pay check.
very nice!
do they buy old tires to?

Re: DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATE 2008

Years ago I was a canvasser for about 8 months, going door to door fundraising and talking politics. Not once, but twice in that time I managed to "canvas" myself a new (to me anyway) bicycle! One was stolen the same night, but the other I rode for years. I think it was my all time favorite bicycle.

I also ended up buying a '66 Honda S-90 from a guy I canvassed. He gave me his card and I called a year or so later asking if he still had it. Not free, but still a good deal at $225.00.
