The 1720s-1730s coins and 1760 coin, made 40-to-70+ years before the 1801 coin, OUGHT to show more than just slight "circulation-wear" IF all of those coins are from the same shipwreck. That causes me to wonder if the 1801 coin was lost in the water a lot later than the shipwreck's date... meaning, it was not part of the shipwreck's cargo.

I considered that as well as it seems the majority of the coins posted have earlier dates. Its important to remember that BVI may have found many other coins and the ones posted are only a small sampling. There could be numerous others with dates closer to these. As far as the minimal wear on the earlier coins, I am not so sure. I feel the 1780 and 1801 coins are part of the same shipwreck due to the distinct reddish "fuzz-like" material present on their surface. BVI surmised earlier that it was old red felt particles adhered to the surface, perhaps remnants of the original lining in the box they were found in. Other suggested it could be oxide from the iron that the box itself was made of. Either way, the red material looks identical to the material present on the earlier dated coins, and I don't believe it is a coral-type compound.

With that in mind, I think we must seriously consider that the ship in question was sailing the oceans sometime after 1800. I'd be curious to hear how that affects the sizing and possible origins of the various shot. CBG, your info on all this is very very interesting. Thanks for providing it. And thank you BVI for sharing what you have so far, it is all so fascinating, I love history.

All I can say is, more than disclosed on this thread! :skullflag:

I am working thru all the finds and seeking professional help and advice.

Now you really have my curiousity peaked. Maybe someday you can post a group shot of all of the coins. I look forward to it.

I am just checking in with you to make sure everything is okay with you! Also, do you have anything to report, if you can do so?

thought I'd let the Douglas Beach Trail thread run for a while - he sure deserves it!! way to go!!

I saw on the news this morning a family in Florida found a lot of Spanish gold. I believe they said in about 16 ft. of water and 400 ft. from shore. And then "they" (news folks) said "its believed that over 30 billion of gold is scattered on the ocean bottom". They make it sound like picking up candy on a July 4th parade route!!!! Frank... lets go to Florida. BVI... move over a little. I'm tired of my cave, Franks creek didn't pan out easily... we're GOING BIG TIME NOW... ocean here we come.
