Hi Jon in Nashville. My husband and I go MDing together but we've never gone into any areas where we feel threatened. We are planning on getting conceal carry permits though at some point but I doubt I will ever carry and I never go MDing alone.i think its a good idea though if you are alone or in a rough neighborhood.

I agree with CoilyGirl - I only "hunt" in area's I consider safe and avoid areas that I feel threatened. While I am licensed to carry "cancealed" - I refuse to put myself in that position. Hey, finding a treasure isn't worth hurting (or getting) hurt. But hey, that is just my opinion and we all know what that is worth!

I agree with you both, I do not carry one, but was woundering if I should. Mainly due to a recient short outing I tried. Had a person hanging around the car asking a lot of questions and he was not local to the area, I excused my self and left, with out showing my gear or talking about any finds I had. Thought it was not worth it for only a 1940's quarter for the day, or worse the lost of my detector and getting hurt. My wife and I Hunt sometimes alone togeather, but neither of us could fight off a paper bag!

I'm probably going to start carrying small .380 in my pocket when night detecting by myself. I was in a park owned by the company I work for, coin shooting at night, as I like to do during summer months. Had never seen a soul here at night, but the last time I was there 2 teenagers walked right up on me and startled me. They said they were just wanting a ride, but could have just as easily hit me over head and robbed me. PS I only wear one earphone over my right ear most of the time to be able to hear what's going on around me.

When not on school property or anywhere concealed is not allowed I carry either my Springfield XD .40 sub or Beretta .40 PX4 compact.

I tried to hunt with my MD once but I missed two good sized bucks that morning......not tried it since. :laughing7: But seriously, I never feel the need to take a gun. If the place is that threatening I'm probably not going there.

Normally, on the beach or in a park or yard, I don't carry. While cache hunting in some remote area I usually carry a Texas Defender 2 barrel derringer. It is .45/.410 cal. The first barrel is loaded with 000 buckshot and the second carries a slug. The first is for snakes, the second is for larger animals. Frank...

Scoop? Did you ever use a scope on you MD? You might have got at least one buck.

I think the bucks were wrinkled up and laying in bull dropings, that is why he left them. lol Frank...

I guess a Gun could work hunting in a bank but I have not found anything with one on public or private property. Then again I haven't had that much luck with my detector either.

It's your choice to carry protection while MDing. In my case I think prevention is the answer. Hunt with someone, Have your keys handy if you have a car alarm. The panic button would at least draw some attention to you though they are pretty much ignored anymore. Be aware of whats going on around you. As mentioned before use only one headphone or none if the area worries you. Leave your wallet-purse at home or hidden in the trunk of your car when possible. Just carry your drivers license for ID and a few dollars. I don't like crowds but there is a bit more safety in them. You will be ask the value of your detector and what you have found pretty often. Play down the value of both. I usually say I got my detector for 25 bucks at a yard sale and have found 3 cents worth of aluminum cans with it so far this year. Not that I paid $900.00 and just found a 1 caret Diamond ring with it.

I'm sure nothing will stop Metal Detecting in Public areas faster than us being seen carrying a firearm. Even concealed weapons can often be spotted. Please don't do it. HH.............GRiley

When and where I carry is a personal matter I don't discuss in public forums.

I carry 95% of the time in general...

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.........

we all need to be safe first, just never know.

Jon

you are correct about stopping DM if we all cary. Best to team but I think, saftey in numbers I'd think would be better. I never speak about my detector or gear any way, must relic hunters know well about them already, and I will not to a stranger, unless at a club meeting and such. Thats why I left when the questions started. That was first time I reaveled a long distance to try Hunting this place alone, and it made me think about carying one.

Jon.

I Hear you Scoop, it was a place I got a shot at to try Hunting for Relics, a known Civil War area less traveled and I thought was a safe place. Till this guy walked up near the car asking questions not related to anything I was doing at all. This is what made me think about it, afterward.

If it makes you feel better twoauers, carry one. Please get some training in handling firearms. Somebody gave me hell for sayin this once, but take a class in disarming armed assailants. Not so you can do it, but so you have an idea how people might disarm you. Maybe a class in firearm retention, cause remember, if you're armed, in a fight, there's always a gun involved, yours. I am one of those folks who have been trained to believe that if your gun is within 2 feet of me, it is mine. I have done that before, and came out ok. I don't go armed while detecting as I haven't seen a need to. And I haven't seen any cases up here yet where innocent detectorists needed to fight their way out of a bad fix with a gun. Take care.

I carry a can of bear spray...if it will stop a grizzly...it will stop a grown man...{personal experience}

good post rginn...if you don't have the training, you shouldn't be armed.
someone might just take that weapon away from you....

I always carry pepper spray, legal, concealable, doesn't leave blood evidence, bodies or finger prints. It is effective against people,
dogs, bears, and you can use it on your tacos (just kidding).
In remote areas I may add a sidearm especially for snakes while nugget hunting though I have seen many snakes and not fired on
them.
I have noticed carrying a sidearm always seems to get you more noticed by rangers than not carrying, just my opinion.
Question, How far would Mr Martin have continued to beat George Zimmerman if a sidearm was not involved?
