I learned last year that it is illegal to keep any feathers from any migratory bird. The exceptions are species that can be hunted. it is also illegal to posses a birds nest. If you want to keep feathers or nests you need a permit from the government. I always knew it was illegal to keep anything from a raptor like hawks and eagles but little song bird feathers, come on!

Yes more B.S. laws brought about by the early animal rights crybabies.

They were so worried if someone started collecting feathers,
they would get the Idea, just shoot the Bird, & you can have all ya want :laughing7:
or we'd have bald birds flying around :laughing9:

or chase the birds from their nest and take the nest before it's abandoned.

& the Crybabies wouldn't know whether to arrest you or not,
so they just made possession illegal.

Just like Elephant Tusks

Not an expert on this subject, but as a waterfowl hunter, I've heard 'things' about feathers.

If your in a waterfowl refuge...and have a bag full of duck feathers, you may have a problem.

Its the eagles and similar birds that can be a problem. Its my understanding that you may NOT posses ANY PART of an eagle, including feathers(s). Unless your a Native American...on a reservation...or engaged in Native American rituals and lawfully operating under some obtuse rule set.

I don't think your average CO could identify an eagle feather. If I found an eagle feather, I would keep it. But I wouldn't stick it in my cowboy hat, and wear it to my local deer check-in station.

What are all us fly fishermen supposed to do- get plastic ones from Wally- I DON'T THINK SO! The next thing will be I can't use deer hair for my poppers.

I'd send mine to Jeff & yelnif to make flies & hatbands with.

I should have quoted these sources in my original reply. Regardless, we are all a wee bit smarter now.

Just to be clear- I DO NOT use eagle ( or any other raptor) feathers for fly tying or any other purpose. I do a lot of exploring and often find the discarded feather on the ground, pick it up and go on. Just so you all know- don't send me any eagle feathers. thanks for nothing-really. HH...

I would not stress it at all... The Park or Game Warden would have too be a complete pie hole too write you a ticket then it would just be thrown out of court anyway more of less . Here is a story Man arrested for possession of eagle feathers, meth » Local News »of a guy and gal getting arrested for collecting bald eagle feathers HOWEVER they had endangered plants and meth (Drugs) on them that is why they got arrested. I guess id just becareful but honestly I do not see anything @ all wrong with taking a feather just do not make a hobby of doing it i guess if its on state or federal land.

i think hutt is right , a officer would have to be pretty durn bored to write you a ticket for having a feather, so if you pick up 1 or 2 , smooth them out stick them in your shirt or bag and go about your business , dont advertise you have them.

but if it really worries you then just about any arts and crafts shop has real feathers for sale and it will be legal for you to buy.

If someone is in a northwest Georgia wildlife management or wilderness area and finds large feathers on the ground, it might not be a good idea to pick one up to take home, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officer said.

How can you Turn them over to the
proper authorities
if you cannot pick them up,
take them home & Contact the National Eagle Repository ?

I was just taking them for safe keeping till I could get home,
find the number & Call :laughing7:

I used to display a feather painted to look like an eagle feather in the back window of my truck when not being displayed on tent door.
Never did get a taker, though at least one d.n.r. agent was inches away from it.
A couple of us debated about putting a couple picked up eagle feathers in another member of our parties duffle before a boarder crossing, would have been unforgiven on that one...,
...

Guess I'd better get rid of my feather pillows and down comforter.

Find an animal Nazi's house.

Bust them all open & Sprinkle Ketchup around

That's why I shave all my birds and burn the evidence :icon_thumright: :laughing7:

Strange that a person can find all kinds of Eagle feathers along Alaska rivers but have to leave them lie. A lot of the world has no regs at all. A guy I know that ties fly's bought a hard to get dead bird from India. It came in the mail dead and dehydrated.
