Could I wait for my 2 days off, could I bowlegs. I left work early today to start my holiday

Dad had tipped me off where the Saxon Sword Pommel had come from & where I should start detecting. 1st rule always ignore your Dad's advice, they know nothing  I started where my gut told me too!
First run I got a roman coin & on that same run I got the best roman brooch I have ever had;

2nd Century import from Gaul (France). Sea Monster called a Hippocampus. The head of a horse & the tail of a fish. The pin still moves. Its a very rare brooch in amazing condition. I can't explain how happy I am with it.

I had 7 roman coins all with some detail in 2.5 hours by myself!

Is it going to be a good day tomorrow?, more importantly will I sleep!!

Re: Day 1 - Hill Top Field.....AMAZING ROMAN SEA MONSTER!!!!!

As I read through your encouraging comments with my cup of tea before this mornings hunt, I wonder what the day may bring!

THANKS TO YOU ALL.

In answer to one of the questions about how many times I have made the Banner, its about 5 times. However, you need to remember some of those were Dads finds. So being a team I get double the glory. (remember I keep all Dads finds & his excellent maps which he produces for every field!)

Holy smoke CRUSADER. . . what a find!! and Banner-worthy also
Any guesses as to if that broach may be "one-of-a-kind"or something that could have been cast in quantity. . . just wondering ???
In any event. . . a wonderful find :)

They are all one of a kind (in a way), as they were produced by the lost wax process. However they would have been produced by a maker in batches all to look the same. Having said that, I have looked at several books with these in it & there are only close matches & none exactly the same shape. So its an interesting variant.

I now have a stinking cold (to much detecting in the rain, including yesterday). Today is a bright day & I'm not letting a cold get in the way.

FINGERS CROSSED FOR MY FIRST ROMAN SILVER OF THE YEAR!

Re: Day 1 - Hill Top Field.....AMAZING ROMAN SEA MONSTER!!!!!

The main reason I like that find is it makes me think, and think, and think. I'd love to see a picture of what someone looked like who wore that.

Re: Day 1 - Hill Top Field.....AMAZING ROMAN SEA MONSTER!!!!!

Looking at the first photo while reading the text, I though well Cru, what a funny fibular (brooch) that is! Looks to me like just a piece of iron molding or something like that. I thought, oh well, if he thinks that is a brooch, OK, but I don't see the pin. It was only when I scrolled down a bit and saw your wonderful find that I knew what you were talking about and did not drink too much at the pub.

Great find, always wanted to find something like that, but they are so rare. Great that you got the banner also! See you got some buttons too! This could be another number 1 field, how are you going to tell them apart then?

Your sea horse joke was close to the money (I think). If in ancient times they found a sea horse, they may have thought it was a baby sea monster, don't you think??

Also, if you notice the loop on the tail. This was to attach a chain & safety pin. Therefore they thought it valuable enough back then to protect!

It would have looked amazing with all the emamel in it :o

No where near a number 1 or 2 field yet. It might have been before the resident detectorist, but lets see what happens today!

Yes it would have. Probably two colors? ... one covering most of the enameled area and the second in the circles including the eye? Not my main interest in detecting finds but pretty awesome no matter what anyone likes.

Wow! Great finds, Crusader...Just allow me to consider that these finds would have a great collocation in a local museum. It also seems you found an archaeological site, in this case never dig under the plowed soil and I hope you will contact the archaeologists, History would gain something with it....:-))

Cheers!!
