I thought I saw some Cherokee lettering on that tree. Get a copy of the Cherokee alphabet here:

Check against your carvings.
The carver may have just carved that message around the lowercase h . . . which is "ni" in Cherokee . . . to obfuscate what was already there.
If it's Cherokee, most likely a "witness tree" and not treasure related. Beech trees were used to tell stories . . . but the whites were determined that they were treasure related. They are treasure related, but the treasure is the tribal stories and history on the trees --- not silver or gold.
