Re: Curious Tree Markings

I second Old Dog's comment and appologize to you 1320, for getting a little bit off the trail on your thread. :coffee2:

No apology necessary, I enjoyed the detour! :icon_thumleft:

Re: Curious Tree Markings

Well, just when I was about to write the carving off as just a carving, the second tree reveals some interesting marks! Even I know what AU means! I'm not sure how to decipher any of this but I think there's more to it than just a simple carving.....

Re: Curious Tree Markings

So, I went back to the "original" tree as one Tnet member suggested, to see if I had missed anything and he was right! I colored in the hash marks beside the letter "B". I also noticed some other longer hash marks below the name and also a lonely letter "C" below the name.

Re: Curious Tree Markings

The hash marks beside the letter B kinda reminded me of an animal track or pointer of some kind so I decided to go in the direction of the "track", made my way to the cliff line and wouldn't you know it....another Beech Tree with even more interesting carvings! Man, this is getting weird now!

For what it's worth, the top line reads "wcs" not wes. My marker was shot, couldn't color it in very well.
Obviously, I have no idea what these carvings are telling me. And as faith would have it, I found another Beech tree (4th one) with all kinds of stuff carved in it. My markers and wire brush were shot so I wasn't able to clean it up. This 4th tree is pretty far away from the other three though.

Alright, let me know what you guys think.

It actually says AUG. August.

I tried hard to make it a Letter "G".....can't do it. There are two distinct "dots" at the upper center and lower center of the letter. If you look close, you can see them....it's an 8.

If it's a letter "g", it would be the only lower case letter used in these carvings.....

The 9th month is September...

1320 im guessing theres a stream close that c might be a bend in creek

That "go ford" part of the carving might be indicating a crossing of a creek or river.

EDIT: In addition, those marks that look like the puncuation mark called a "colon" are interesting. I looked up the meaning of "colon" in a copy of Merriam-Webster's Pocket Guide to Punctuation and there are so many different meanings that you should look it up yourself so that I don't have to type all of those things here. LOL There might be some double meanings involved........................and maybe not.

I can see some of the stuff that is on the trees in the rock wall in the back ground. I would mark them but I do not know how to, sorry. Maybe someone can look at it and mark it up. I hope this will help. I have a post up that hasn't had much response if anyone can look. It is titled "anyone wanna figure this out". Thanks!

Yes indeed! Or the head of the hollar? Most hollars around here are shaped like a horseshoe or C :dontknow:

Thanks for helping me out, much appreciated.

Yes, as in go ford (cross) the creek, or as in a creek ford (crossing)...thank you, I like your interpretation.

Tell me what you see! I thought that if I took a photo with the cliff in the background that someone might see something that I can't. I can "paint" it with my imagination, thanks for taking a look.

Ok I well try
The TF . The T is on the rock wall . The large white owl ?? The T is in the medal of it . There is two cc one is backward. below the T to the left is a face or a skull with two eyes or two cc . There is some kind of cross on the rock wall the top is gone. The cross stops at large stone block. I hope this will help.

Great, that worked out well. I see everything that you painted. I had also noticed the T and possibly an F. I noticed the area that you see as a skull with two eyes as well but I didn't think of it as a skull until you mentioned it, nice job and thank you.

1320 i think u might want to compare these to king james version to see if there is a match
