I will post pictures of the back today after work. From what I can tell, there aren't any areas where attachment hooks once were like the buckles I'm accustomed to seeing.

Great .. Thanks .. can you tell what kind of metal it is?

Here is a shot of the back. I'm not sure what the metal it's made of is. It appears to have a dark gray color when looking at the broken edges.

Nice find. I was surprised when I found the grave marker that had CSA on it and Deo Vindice on the back side in my avatar. Hope you have alot more good finds.

Was it marking a grave? In many states, it is illegal to be in possession of one of those markers.

I believe the pewter CSA buckle was unique to the Army of Tennessee. They had no border nor were they beveled. Beats me what you have but it has to be something other than a buckle.

I hope your close enough to the orginal hole so you can find it again and maybe recoup the missing piece(s). Great find!!!!

I hate to say,but your Star device isnt exact as the example you posted, and it doesnt look "Period",with that being found at the same site as this piece I am wondering if the plate isnt some kind of later toy?It also appears to be made of Pot Metal which isnt "period",either...that I am aware of

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure you are right. I found this on relicman.com under the heading "fakes and replicas". It certainly appears to by the same as my "buckle". Dang!

A huge thanks to everyone! I will just have to go out and find a real one now:)

Thanks for having an open mind, many people take info wrong. Most on here just want to state the facts as close to as possible and not lead folks astray.Cool finds anyway

It looks like it may have been attached to some other piece of something,it looks to be made if cast iron,so it probably was a plate attached to some other object

It may date to the 1880s-turn of century... if that helps any... being Texas they sure did make a-lott of replicas CSA stuff after the war. Neat find regardless, that woulda sent chills down my spine if i dug it... Hope the next one you find is cw period !

I do not believe that is your item. For one, it doesn't have a double border. You also stated that your piece did not have any attachment points on the back. I think we need to keep looking.
Don't forget that Edward1976 said he would reveal the true identity and 72 hours are almost up so hang in there a little while longer.

Ha! I'm not holding my breath on Edward. I sent pictures to Relic Man for identification. I did notice a difference in the boarders of the buckles I posted thinking it was my item after I posted it. I think the buckle on the left side of the picture has a double border but the two borders are much closer together. Maybe Edward will come through with the ID after all! If not, hopefully Relic Man can pin it down.

I hope Ed does have the correct identification. I am not "throwing off" on him as I don't know him. I just wish he hadn't made the post that he did. If I can help someone ID something I do it.

I am bumping this post for two reasons. One is to apologize to Edward1976 if I offended him with any of my comments. And, two, to hopefully get this piece correctly IDed. I would really like to know what it is, even if it is a fake.

I too would love to see an ID even though I don't have great hopes of authenticity. I have PM'd Edward and received no response... I'm hoping for a response from the relic man website.
