is it just me, or does it look like cast iron to anyone else?

Doesn't look like cast iron to me but looks like some sort of base metal possibly plated... I'm not sure an authentic plate would break apart like that... I'm no expert but waiting for someone who is to chime in

The plate is much thinner than I would expect a belt plate to be and much smaller. Even if its a replica I'm not sure what its a replica of.

So hoping what you found was the real deal, how exciting!

I'm like everyone else....haven't seen anything like it. Have looked at quite a few rectangular CSA plates but none that thin and none that is cast outside the border like that one.

Does seem a bit thin for what we think it is but who knows. I like others would love to know what's the history on this piece. Great find, I'd have been flipping out after realizing what it is.

It's a what we called in the Navy a "cover device", in other words something for yer hat!8-) hint hint .I know what it is, but I challenge you first to beat me. I found a pic of it online this afternoon, you have 72 hours...E

Guys I found this "Texas" star/cross at the same site as the CSA plate I posted. While researching the authenticity of my CSA plate I found a similar star Texas pin. See my pin and the google find below.

As was posted earlier, that border doesn't look correct. It is definitely not in Mullinax book. A really good find but I vote no as to being an original rectangle belt plate. Also the thinness of the plate would indicate it could not stand up to heavy campaigning.

If you have any information that would help identify this piece please post it. Inquiring minds want to know!

My research has come up empty. Definitely can't find a plate like it but have found several versions of the Texas star. I will clean up the plate and post more pics when I get home in a few hours. Edward1976 knows what the plate it! Spill your beans Edward!:)

Jeff actually saw one at your show Sun at Relic man he wanted 2500 , I sent the OP the phone pictures I took

Could it be a plate from a trunk or box? And nothing to do with a belt at all

Dig until your arm falls off

I bet that Texas star hat pin is worth a pretty penny. Your CSA plate is some sort of hat device I believe. It looks to be made of white metal which would explain the reason for it breaking up. It is a very nice find even in that condition.
