I don't know about the rest of you but I think it is rude of someone who claims to know the identity of a piece not to share it with the rest of us.

He may be playing a game... Anyway it is possible this could be from the civil war time period but used for civilian use but also could have been made around the 1880-turn of the century for something. Be nice to know what though...

Again good thread for "What Is It" are members allowed too post other members finds in What Is It ?

Yeah there's always one goofball that enjoys screwing with people, anymore I ignore them

It's a what we called in the Navy a "cover device", in other words something for yer hat!8-) hint hint .I know what it is, but I challenge you first to beat me. I found a pic of it online this afternoon, you have 72 hours...E

And it could be from a kids cap pistol set.

Looks to me like it's a pouch plate. Several people stating as did I that its thin and something thin isn't going to handle the abuse as a belt buckle etc however a pouch plate isn't going to be undergoing the rigors of battle so wouldn't it be safe to assume it would made thin? It looks very much like what I've seen through my books but nothing stated the thickness of the piece.

And fyrf my earlier comment was not saying I knew what it was and withholding the info, was stating how the OP said they didn't realize what they had till they got home and assembled the pieces. Coming across an item like that is awesome and I would never play games like that.

Badger, I believe they were referring to Edward1976s post about knowing what it is but wont tell us for 72 hours.

Found the missing link! This piece made its way into my junk pouch and I think/hope it will possibly be able to at least ID the function of this. I cleaned it up and took one more pictures.

Also found this short .22 round. Same time era you think???

As someone said earlier Confederate States of America and to my best recollection was a plate worn on hats. Keep digging friend you never know what else may be close by or in that hole. Great find

I stand corrected that sure does look like a hinge maybe from a footlocker or saddlebag peaks my interest now I hope you find out ill start researching too

I was not referring to your post. I apologize for any ill feelings it may have caused. I have searched and searched without success. It would save us all a lot of time and effort if Edward would come forward with his ID.

Doesn't look like any plate I've ever seen.

I haven't either BB .. I am very curious about what type of metal this item is made from, and would like to see a photo of the entire back.
