Regardless of era or fraternity, this is going to be a Banner find. I can't even find another online other than Quindy's Id. What a sweet find! :headbang:

Looks like there might be some silver gilding there still! Have you looked into aluminum jelly? It won't hurt the brass, for sure. Neat find!

Cheers,

Buck
lol those are little white pieces of fuzz from the towel on the buckle :laughing9:

No, I meant in between the rays and in the recesses of the leaves. I know what the fuzz looks like. Your plate looks in places like my button looked before aluminum jelly (left hand photo). You might be surprised.

Its Hard to say because they were used from before the Civil War until 1902. Usually the backmark is the determining factor but this looks like it has an iron back to it but its definitely a General Staff. I've dug General Service Eagle Buttons with Iron backs before, never a General Staff with an Iron back, but that doesn't mean that they weren't made. It's the real deal and I'd say its either Civil War or Indian Wars....just no way to really tell with the iron back. Good Looking Button though, I'd display it proudly.

Beautiful plate! I would be excited about that find, HH.

Re: CIVIL WAR OR 1800's NYC POLICE BELT PLATE*UPDATED PICS

your hook item might be a wagon anchor. these were used to keep horses from dragging a wagon away while the driver was not on board. a rope would go through the eye and the hook kicked into the ground, the rope would then be tied to the wagon.

Re: CIVIL WAR OR 1800's NYC POLICE BELT PLATE*UPDATED PICS

I'm voting BANNER on this NY buckle; that's a sweeeeet as well as rare find! Congratulations Dave! It's in GREAT shape too, and do as Buckles said, use some naval jelly on it. I know it was heart-thumper when you pulled it out of the ground.

I have a question: Was the buckle down in the cellar hole or did you find it near the hole? It makes me wonder how a NY Police buckle got out in the woods? I wonder if the policeman was shot/killed. Whenever I dig something historical like your buckle, my mind runs places and I wonder how it got there and the story behind it. Surely as heavy as this buckle is, he would have realized it fell off, not to mention his pants could fall without a belt & buckle. Of course, we could all go to the boring story of: the tongue broke, so he retired the buckle, but it's much more exciting to think of other ways on how it got lost. :icon_thumleft:

Breezie

PS: I love the spider web pic too.

thanks Breezie! it was found about 10 feet from cellar hole on top not inside foundation. the owner may have been a NYC officer.one will never know i guess? i hope it does get up on the banner as very few are known.i was told by a CW expert that it is police issued as far as he's concerned and has only seen one since mine
