Congrats on the New York City Militia Sword Belt Plate Dave! :notworthy:

The condition of the front of the eagle button is beautiful! :o

I'm voting BANNER on the sword belt plate for you buddy!

Dave

This is a beautiful relic Dave!
Could it have been a pot hanger for cooking over a fire? :icon_scratch:
thanks Dave! yeah that or a meat hook.not really sure?

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

Hey HMN,

I got to say that button, and plate are in FANTASTIC condition.

Great finds, not surprising from you though.

Good luck out there.

Rick

thanks Rick!

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

You asked for a comment on your eagle button. Kind of anticlimatic after such a nice plate. I don't believe your button is military. That is the officer type and they were generally very well made buttons. Those were duplicated for civilian clothing at one time. The iron back makes me think yours is a non military button. Great plate, though.

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

If there was ever a BANNER find...you just found it...CONGRATS! I bow in praise.

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

thanks everyone for the great comments & banner nominations. in general how scarce is a plate like this even if it's law enforcement as opposed to military? has anyone here dug one?

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

Yep....banner all the way :headbang: that is so cool....

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

The bent iron in the sink may very well be a spike tomahawk. Have dug quite a few in the past of different lengths.

no matter what era/origin, still an outstanding find :hello2: :headbang:

Nice Finds! The plate appears to be #714 in the American Military Belt Plates book and is New Yourk City Police waist belt plate 1875-1900. It is missing the tongue. WTG, Quindy.
police? :'(

I scanned the page from the O Donnell/Duncan book and added it to my first post. HH, Quindy.
i got all excited for nothin huh? i can't undo my happy dance lol
That's a beautiful buckle and was probably worn on a dress uniform at many funeral services for NY policemen killed in the line of duty. That's something to be proud of Bud. Cherish it, Quindy.

umm wait one second..in the description it says under photo..made of white cast metal.this plate is solid brass

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

Who cares about the tongue - that's a really great find. The condition is excellent. Keep hitting those Connecticut woods. Wish I had more places like that down here on Long Island.

Re: CIVIL WAR BELT PLATE*CELLAR HOLES WITH SNIFFY

This is a rare buckle to recover irregardless of era and has a very pleasing patina. It should be displayed on BANNER. Great recovery Dave, Quindy.

Re: CIVIL WAR OR NYC POLICE BELT PLATE*UPDATED PICS

Looks like there might be some silver gilding there still! Have you looked into aluminum jelly? It won't hurt the brass, for sure. Neat find!

Cheers,

Buck
