I was able to get back out to the island that I went to last weekend. It's very difficult to find any info on this place which made it more attractive to me. After a canoe trip across the bay I did some more exploring before heading to the area that I found the blow hole button and colonial shoe buckle last weekend. The area I found those in was down at the waters edge so I made a straight line up the hill. Came to a small flat area and bang....pulled out a big old flat button. Good start. Slowed down and started picking target out of the iron. Targets were all 6-10" deep and before I knew it I had dug a pile of big old colonial flat buttons. Then I hit a nice high 80s signal and pulled a gorgeous brass shoe buckle. This is my favorite one yet and it's got a beautiful design on it. This thing is huge and super heavy duty brass. This is the 4th full shoe buckle I've hit and I'm just in love with these things. Love everything about them. The history, the shape, the designs....just something about them. Right before I had to leave I got a strange signal that was masked by iron and dug a beautiful 1802 DB LC at about 10". This is my nicest DB yet....by far. And I had just been thinking, man I hope I can just pull one coin out of here. Always make my hunt feel complete.
It killed me to leave this place knowing I'd barely scratched the surface but I had to. So all in all a great day with 12 buttons, a shoe buckle and the 1802 DB. Some of these buttons are awesome and most have complete shanks. The condition of everything I've found here has been fantastic. I can't wait to get back there.
All the best fellow Tnetters, Abe

Fantastic hunt, Ahab! Those buttons are wicked. Congrats on the sexy DB!

Keep' em coming from that spot. :)

CMD I really appreciate the nice comment. I'm not too proud of my early. 20 s but since that time I've made it a point to try to have a positive effect on the lives of those around me. Sometimes just a smile or wave or kind word can turn the day around for a person. I help my neighbors and hold doors and always try to speak to others with respect. Small things in the whole scheme of things. But if everybody took the time to do these small things what an impact that would have. Ok that's my lil teaching for today :-)

Thanks brother! Cannot wait to get back :-)

Seems you're getting into the zone. Pretty soon you're going to be one of those diggers who looks like he knows what he's doing. :)

Awesome stuff, Abe. Can't take my eyes off that DB. Amazing detail and beautiful patina. I'm actually vacationing in Maine this week- what a great state. Keep up the good work!

Thanks MG! Whereabouts are you?

Just hit my coin with some coin care to keep it from drying and peeling or doing any of the crazy stuff dug coppers do when you pull them from there soily home. It looks blotchy because of the light hitting the damp spots on the coin but this stuff seems to work well. I put a bit on a qtip and roll it across the face. Then take a dry qtip and give one quick roll across each side to get any thick stuff off then into an airtite holder. image-1505767512.jpg image-3321875665.jpg

For a dug coin you can't really ask for much better condition.

Yeah this island hunting has totally thrown off all my preconceived notions about saltwater areas. The coppers I've found hunting saltwater islands have been the nicest condition I've ever dug. Even the buttons look great. I thought that the higher salt content would absolutely destroy these coins but I'm starting to think that the nice sandy soil that drains well and the possible lack of fertilizers has kept these babies looking nice. What do you think my very wise friend lol

I also believe "nice sandy soil that drains well" has a lot to do with the condition of old copper. Might also be the lower mineral content as most sand is just quartz. Don't know for sure, but I did predict on a video that the copper i was about to pull would be in decent condition, based on the sandy soil ?

I think all that plus they're not often flipped up by a plow and exposed to more oxygen. I can think of one place I hunt that is sandy, but has been a farm field forever and condition is no better. I think you need several factors in your favor to get great condition on most coppers.... but it seems you can get a lucky one almost anywhere.... and that's no doubt because of one overwhelming factor, we just never know what that is which made it survive so well.

Well said my friend. I think I will go back and see what else is hiding that may not be destroyed
