I was able to get back out to the island that I went to last weekend. It's very difficult to find any info on this place which made it more attractive to me. After a canoe trip across the bay I did some more exploring before heading to the area that I found the blow hole button and colonial shoe buckle last weekend. The area I found those in was down at the waters edge so I made a straight line up the hill. Came to a small flat area and bang....pulled out a big old flat button. Good start. Slowed down and started picking target out of the iron. Targets were all 6-10" deep and before I knew it I had dug a pile of big old colonial flat buttons. Then I hit a nice high 80s signal and pulled a gorgeous brass shoe buckle. This is my favorite one yet and it's got a beautiful design on it. This thing is huge and super heavy duty brass. This is the 4th full shoe buckle I've hit and I'm just in love with these things. Love everything about them. The history, the shape, the designs....just something about them. Right before I had to leave I got a strange signal that was masked by iron and dug a beautiful 1802 DB LC at about 10". This is my nicest DB yet....by far. And I had just been thinking, man I hope I can just pull one coin out of here. Always make my hunt feel complete.
It killed me to leave this place knowing I'd barely scratched the surface but I had to. So all in all a great day with 12 buttons, a shoe buckle and the 1802 DB. Some of these buttons are awesome and most have complete shanks. The condition of everything I've found here has been fantastic. I can't wait to get back there.
All the best fellow Tnetters, Abe

Amazing condition on that DB. Is that what happens when they don't get 200 years of fertilizer dumped on them? I have yet to find one of those puppies. Someday...

Ya know Dirtwisher that's a great point! This is an island that is in the salt water. I always assumed old coppers would be destroyed due to the very high salt content. To my surprise my first couple trips to salt water islands have proven to give up the best looking coppers I've dug. I think between the sandy soil that drains well and also your point about the fertilizer makes for some pretty gentle soil. All the buttons survived well too so it's not just a fluke. Hopefully there's some more coins hiding out there. Maybe some silver:-) a GW button lol ok I'm getting carried away

Lol! Like your treasure guard!
Awesome finds! Congrats!
Sounds like you have your own treasure Island!

The whole trip seems like one heck of an adventure, Abe. A canoe trip to an isolated island, relics from early settlers, and even a sharp DB. Where do I sign up? Would have been a fabulous day with even half the finds. Good luck on your next trip, I hope it is one step better than this one.

I try to make every hunt more of an adventure than just another detecting trip. I try to see cool places that I haven't seen before with great history. Sometimes you hit a killer spot like I did yesterday and sometimes I don't find a thing but I have a fun adventure and get to see awesome places and walk where settlers stood during the colonial period. I always have fun whether I find cool stuff or not... But the colonial relics and coins sure make it fun. I am loving all of these cool buttons

Outstanding finds!...Holy buttons Batman!
Thanks Dave! Hard to imagine they lost all those buttons and I'm sure there's more. Hopefully a GW hidden there somewhere

Great mix of finds and the time frame is a 40 year window centered around 1800 - a really special time frame for early American relics and coins! Good luck on your next trip!

Thanks Steve! I was thinking that if ever a GW or very early american silver might pop up it would be at a site like this. We shall see

Those finds are just incredible. Ha, did you plant the ole Abe flag and claim the island as your own. Your new lil' buddy looks like a great protector :). Glad your research has paid off. Thanks for including all of us on T-Net to ride along with you on your journeys! I can't get over the great condition of everything. Must be the soil. Keep it up my friend and keep on posting the goods!
