It looks like it opens and closes like scissors but it does not. It is about 5 inches long and either silver or silver plated. The cup on the end is very shallow and shaped like an eye

I agree, that's what it looks like it SHOULD be, but maybe we're being narrow minded, the forest for the trees, and all that.

Oh boy, I showed it to my wife, she says the hook at the end hooks into a tray, the other end sits in a cradle on the other end of the tray, and you burn incense in it. Hmmm.

How about one of those eyelash devices for curling long eyelashes

It doesn't make sense to make a non-functioning Victorian-looking item that never existed. I probably looked at a thousand snuffers today and couldn't find it.

Thanks for looking. Im surprised there are no manufacturers marks on it.

For all I've been able to find, it appears to be a non-functioning replica of something that never existed.

Fondots, are you saying that the scissors physically can't open and they are truly one molded piece? There is a hinge pin. Is it possible that they are just stuck closed? Have you posted a picture of the other side of your piece? I may have missed it.

In the long run I guess it doesn't matter. I have no clue what you have. I'll keep looking though.

Also, I may have missed it but what is the history on this item? Did you buy it? Inherit it? Any additional info on the background will help. If already asked and answered I apologize.

And I swear the scissors have to open. It looks like they should in your picture and the other picture unearthed by the amazing sleuths on this site.
