This is a bit of a todays finds put together with a what is it. Found today…..heel plate, 3 Lincoln pennies, an overall button, buckle off a horse and a ……I don’t know bat shaped object.

It’s a brass tag of some sort. Says John Robinson, Lynchburg (in cursive) Virginia. Back has no obvious attachment points and I don’t see any nail/screw holes. Any ideas?

Is the back of the batwing smooth?
Enlarging the pic, it appears like at one time it had many little sharp “spikes” sticking off of it, as if the spikes dug in and held when the object was hit with a little bit of force

Did a bit of looking, there was a John Robinson in that area who was a freed slave after the Civil War, he was a cobbler in the area. His small home apparently is now preserved at Appomattox

I would call it “smoothish”. I do see what you mean with the raised portions, almost like a gang nail. Not sure if that would work with brass, but I don’t know.

I found the same thing on Google. This was found 1.5 hrs east of Lynchburg and 1 hr east of Appomattox.

What a fascinating artifact. Looks like a cartouche' - like those seen on c. 1861 Civil War Surgical Set by Geo. Tiemann, N.Y. at https://www.medicalantiques.com/civ...rman_Smith_MD_Tiemann_Civil_War_set_c1861.htm

Is this the same man? https://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/dvb/sources.asp?b=Robinson_John_d_1908
no way of telling what type of box it came off of, but think you’re right if was a placard inlaid into a trunk/box/desk etc.

No idea if that was the same man, but it was found halfway between Richmond and Cumberland, and ~45 min from jetersville. Would be pretty cool if it were
