Battle axe?

Found this at a very old site today, never seen an axe like this, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I saw one of these before.....the fellow that owned it said it was called a "canoe axe" or a canoe hawk..... he said that the pointy part was to hook onto canoes to pull them up on shore after the days excursion (1600's =1700's) . You don't see many of these....great find !
