I'm still in absolute shock. I went out to place that I've been to dozens and have done really well. After digging a bunch of junk targets and a WWII button I decided to try the other side of the area where I've never had any luck. Previously I'd only dug trash targets out of there. But today I noticed a stonewall that I hadn't seen before. After a few minutes I got a strong signal and almost passed it over because of all the trash of my previous times being out there. Out popped this copper. I knew it was different and that I had seen it before but I wasn't sure what it was. I texted a friend the picture and that I thought it might be a bust of George Washington. When I got home I looked it up and almost felt faint. I remembered looking at it before and not thinking much of it because I assumed I would never find one. I will be going back tomorrow and spending the day there. I have no cleaned it and haven't really handled it. The first picture was when it was fresh out of the ground.

Nice info. Read where these are actually attributed to Atlee's time spent at Newburgh NY. The small head pictured in Breens was actually deemed a forgery by the ANS in 2007. As regards to the 2 small head die pairs known......well we may have a third.

My gut says the obverse will be a match so only a new reverse die. But still, that would be huge.

Maybe we should open a bidding window for this and see how high it goes???

Sure, if you can tell us what it is. :) But if you want to get it rolling now put me down for $50, $5,000 or $10,000 to start. :happysmiley:

With that bid you're assuming the best case scenario for the ID... and if it turns out to be the case, you'll be in tough because you have no idea who you will be bidding against! You'd probably find 10k in change under the cushions of his couch. :laughing7: :icon_scratch: ...I wonder if he'd let me look. ;)

Excitement is killing me! If it's a new variety.....on as rare a coin as this...even though IT'S a ground piece....you may still be looking at 30-$40 GRAND. Depending on what these guys with deep pockets want to throw out there. Still waiting.................

I should know this week coming up. Lost a close friend this week so my mind hasn't been in the game.

Wow!!! Treat it careful-- I'd recommend possibly taking it to a museum to find out about conservation/ preservation before you do any cleaning. You might consider getting it insured before you leave it with anyone or send it off!

Sorry to hear about your loss Slasher. The coin can wait for now.

Stripping the "active" PVC from the coin,(as the "conservatory" companies do), can expose pitting, lose detail, and actually damage the surface of the coin more than you think. Then they'll coat it with god knows what. They can do more damage than good, but you won't know that till you pay them, and get the coin back. By then it's too late-- for you! Eye appeal is everything right now.(Thanks IP) No matter what these companies tell you, you're gambling with potential DISASTER! Take the advice from people on here who KNOW! I've used grading companies before. PCGS, and ANACS. I would NEVER....EVER even consider using a third party conservatory grader. It's a ground found copper! You cannot change that. I like when they use the word "qualifier". It's actually a "disqualifier", which is a problem with the coin. Funny how they use the word qualifier instead, like it's some attribute that's going to help value.:tongue3: Conservation?......A big fancy word used by grading companies to drum up business. Don't "buy" into it. And if you do......please do us a favor and post before and after pics, so we can remember what the coin actually looked like!:laughing9:

Word of advise.. .I found a 1801 Bust (Flowing hair ) Large Cent, sent it to a "conservatory / Preservation Co ". associated with NGC.. They Distroyed my coin. I wanted to preserve and grade my coin,. I had more details on this coin when it came out of the ground, then when I sent it in to get "preserved".. They F'ed up and they knew it. They said that the coin was too far gone.

After my bad experience with this NGC, I mentioned to an old timer what had happened to me, he said this about coppers.

1. NEVER put them under water to clean
2. Get tooth pics, paper towel, vasaline, and cotton q-tips.
3. put coin on white paper towel
4. SLOWLY remove dirt with tooth pic - look at a good picture of coin and use as a GUIDE - SLOWLY remove dirt (Both Sides of coin )
5. Dip q-tips in vasaline, and finish removing the rest of the dirt slowly, on both sides.

Good luck.. And congrats.

Glad you said that because more people have to realize often times there's no mad scientist with magical powers at the other end... just a guy rolling the dice and seeing what will happen.

As for the old timer, he obviously has good intentions but the truth of the matter is you never apply general cleaning rules to anything because it's ALWAYS a case by case basis.

Hmmmm have been spending a little time on this and something caught my attention. Check out the 6 in relation to the 8. They do not appear to match to me. My Breen says there's a die struck counterfeit that exists in the Yeoman guide books, be he has not seen it.... So I wonder if that is what this might be. It's still a great find regardless, but I'm not really sure what to think.

I also wondered about the arm position but figured that could just be from the ground condition... but to me the 6 and 8 do not seem to match.

The first thing I noticed on your side by side view is that the date is further to the right than the other one.

Super Awesome BANNER find and very interesting thread! Congratulations! :notworthy:
