So was the finding of the City of Troy. It was myth and legend until it was found.

What is the myth and legend is that Troy was discovered by reading Homer's ILLIAD.
The existence of Troy / Illium was well known throughout the old world, it was mentioned by Alexander the Great and other historians.
In fact there were 9 Troy cities built on top of earlier Troy / Illium cities before being abandoned and "lost".
So evidence and proof existed throughout the ages that Troy actually was a real city.
