Re: 5 Gallon Crock W/ US & Eagle (crock question)

Circa 1900–1940, based on shape and color. Don't know the mark.

Value--not much. It has been drilled for a lamp cord. Probably worth more if you make it back into a lamp? :dontknow: :laughing9:

[edited the date... it's not the newer type]

It looks like a "Turkey Dropping", at least that's what I think they're called. It's a blob of glaze that dripped off a piece placed above it during the firing.

Yep, long about the turn of the century, Mama had to make a lamp out of this salt glazed jug to keep Papa from making his 'tonic!' I'd price the jug around $40.00 even with the hole. Breezie

Nah, my momma taught me better than to say that. :laughing7:

Breezie says $40, I would go with that. It has size going for it. People seem to :love4: big crocks and jugs.

Shouldered jugs = circa 1900

Beehive jugs = post Civil War

Ovoid (tapered base)--those are the ones to go for. :icon_thumright:

black mark instead of the typical blue makes it more desirable.Value is probably 75.00 to 100.00 even with the hole.

Not around here... but this is Red Wing country. And it's all about condition for Redwing collectors.

Thanks. I picked it up at the local flea market for 15 bucks. So I guess I did ok. I think I might just make a lamp. A floor lamp. Thanks to everyone for the help.

And who is the manufacturer?

Couldn't see the neck very well but it looks like it may have the ramains of a cork? If so, it may have been some kind of big dispenser for parties, butter milk, or whatever with a wooden spigot that would go into the hole. But on second thught it would have been awful hard to fill up with that narrow neck, so probably not. The one I recall as a child was filled with koolaid and ice for a kids birthday party but it was the open top kind. Monty

Most of those have a bigger hole, and a raised ring around the hole.

Should make a cool lamp. I guess the cat will have a hard time knocking that one over. :laughing7: $15 is good. :icon_thumright:

$40 is the price that popped into my mind even before I read down further. I have bought and sold a few over the years, so I would like to think I know a little something about them.

Condition is everything for a collector, but as a designer piece which I feel is more in line with what you have there, $40 retail would be a fair price prior to this rotten economy. What you could fetch now is really anyone's guess as people are more concerned about putting food on the table, paying the mortgage and putting gas in the car instead of decorating the home with interesting artifacts.

Personally what you paid for it, I say you got a good deal, so just enjoy it yourself if you are not hot to sell it for a quick buck.

As for the hole, I have seen some drilled for spigots.

I bought it for myself. I was hoping that I did not get ripped off. It was obviously worth the 15 bucks to me cause if it was not I would not have bought it. Thanks for everyone's help.
