HEY GUYS AND GALS

This is the pictures from 2 hunts.....6 hrs total hunting.

Out this morning -9 and snowing ....only there for about 15 minutes and a iffy signal...lotsa hot rocks there.

Kicked away 2 of the rocks and signal was more crisp... out pops a coin...foud some water and washed it off to see Carolus on the back....eyes were watering so bad trying to see musta looked like I was crying.

Couldn,t believe it and in great shape besides....2 nd Spanish coin in less than 2 weeks....never seen one all last year !!!

Time i got done hunting you couldn,t see a rock ..everything was covered in 2 inches of snow but the detector seemed to be more sensitive than ever. Don,t really understand that....one day there is only a few targets...next day there is lotsa targets.

hmmmm... that didn,t work..lol... try again.

QUESTION What is the value of a 1/2 reale in comparison to say British 1 penny from the same time period ? Would it be equal to 1 British penny ? Only way to learn is to ask !!!!!
The quickest and easiest way to look at it would be to compare the British equal. A 1 Real would be fairly close to a 6 Pence, so 6 Pennies, and a 1/2 Real probably a 3 Pence, so 3 Pennies.

What is the name of the book--I can always order it in. |??

I,m preferring the winter hunting actually...the heat kills me...is cold but not too bad if you can get outta the wind.

I used to get in a winter hunt on the shores once in a while years ago, but not lately, I would gladly take it now but sadly most of our shores are iced solid; we need a break on the cold and some springtime weather for that to change. I've moved away from the shores because the finds were tortured by the salt so badly and always settled for better condition in the fields, but if its all you got, beggars aren't choosers.

As for reference material , the Charlton book on pre-Confederation tokens is always a good place to start, although you will no doubtedly start to see non-Canadian coins, so then you might start looking at some other books, or use the forum members for their advice as you have been doing , I've personally expanded my own knowledge vastly by simply using google and saving websites members have posted on the subject; but I do like to research and learn about coins etc, and after some familiarity with seeing lots of different coins/tokens some of it does sink in

Having dug thousands of coins over the past twenty years of detecting, I'm still amazed that each and every year I find something new and different, that's part of the reasons I like metal detecting so much

Missed this one until I seen IH's reply. If you're interested in having the reference material this is what I'd buy to cover the most bases for the least amount of money. Charlton Tokens, Charlton Canadian coins, Redbook, Krause World coins 1601-1700, 1701-1800, 1801-1900.

OK..ty for the answer.... so a 1/2 reale back in 1781 was quite a bit of money.!!!

Someone most likely wasn,t too happy about losing that !!!

That's my dream is to find Spanish and or colonial era treasure. Props for digging in snow that's got to be dreadful.

Your reale is gorgeous! Cleaned up really well. Congrats on super find! :occasion16::wav::occasion16: Andi

Yes..this one looks nice indeed...I love them !!!

The last one came outta the ground in 2 pieces and very thin...also holed.......so I crazy glued it back together.!!

Was so disappointed as I figured I would never see another.

Dug it on the shore at half tide...we have 24-30 foot rise and fall tides here.....so can dig year round here if you can stand the cold !!!

But land is definitely covered in snow and frozen hard....no digging is possible.

Look at you with your fancy blue lobster buddy! You must be some sort of computer whiz or something :-) have you ever caught a blue
Lobster? I worked for a lobsterman on Vinalhaven who had caught one. Crazy looking thing

TY for the info IH

Ya ..I been threw PEI a couple times during the middle of winter and there is no way you can detect the shores there from what I seen...big thick cakes of ice covering the shore out past low water... so I can imagine what it must be this winter.

Salt does usually ruin most things.... but I been lucky to find a few things the salt was kind to...quite a surprise to me.

Will have a look for them books.... sounds like a lot of good info in them. I have learned a lot about coins and history since joining this site....makes detecting even more enjoyable.
I got a LONGGGGGGGGGGG ways to go to catch your coin count !!!! Thats a lot of swinging !! Very surprising your still able to find coins you don,t already have....keeps the thrill alive !!!

Best of luck this year to you !.... find something better than IP...hehe

As you are finding out, there are no guarantees in detecting, having said that, you never know when something great is going to show up, you can just look for the best spot you can find and hope for the best
When IP and I get out detecting, sometimes he finds the good one, sometimes me , but it all evens out I think; I'm just as proud of my relic collection, as he is of his, both have an equal amount of sweat and holes to back them up

I gotta start working on my relic collection.... got some good ones so far but I need to start digging more low numbers on the detector.

Cousin ED who has been just getting into detecting since Xmas has been going out with me sometimes.... he digs almost everything... so my guess is that he will have a decent collection by the end of the year..prolly better than mine. He digs a lot of junk iron...funny seeing his reaction... he loves it.

Always glad to see him find something good even when I don,t find anything....seems to be just as fun watching him grinning and keeps him interested also...lotsa people get disgusted after 2 or 3 hunts with nothing to show and quit.

Iron relics in the saltwater flats are rare to find in decent shape....mostly spikes and iron encased in black slag.

ZodiacDave found a very nice piece inside one of them pieces of black slag.... was a grape shot...too cool. So I been breaking apart a lot of them black pieces lately looking for the goodies.
