Hey everyone,

This has been a really nice past 4 weeks hunting. Weather was great in Febuary here in Pa. Never hunted really in Feb until this yr.

I have to say my forum time has been limited. I check the site daily but just to read and answer pms and help people. I like to look at all the finds anymore.

I've been spending loads of time reading maps matching homesteads up and now with gps at hand making the finds come to life. I was able to locate 2 nice sites from a old map from 1876.

Gps put us spot on. There is going to be alot of great finds this yr now with the technology and the 7 yrs or so I've been studying maps. It is starting to pay and make sence.

This would take alot of time to really write up the bumps bruises miles walked and iron dug to tell the whole story. What I will say is that it's been a reward to have found and located these old settlers cabins.

They dated I'd say right around 1850 or so. Right after the federal period I would say. I actually was standing right ontop of one of the cabin sites almost walked away and said wait a minute lets just turn the units on and check.

Immediately everyone's units were hitting iron. Within minutes I had a 1830's buckle. We scoured the site and came up with some nice finds. Including at the site 6 indian heads. Witch the dates were good one's.

My brother got a super nice 1866 and a 1803 drapped bust large cent. I got 2 1868's a 1864 no L 1879 1881. Nice yrs to find. I also found a copper to need id for it. Looks to be about 29 mm and has a bust on the front. Looks like a liberty cap, drapped bust or jefferson head.

Not sure hope you copper experts out there Don in SJ can tell. Yesterday I went back to the sight with my not even 2 yr old son to see what else I could find. I hit a beautiful 1852 silver 3 cent piece.

I said about a month ago this would be the yr for pre 1850 silver. I am very close to closing in on that. I wanna hunt now for more coppers and early silvers. I got more than enough turn of the century and on items.

I got alot more sights lined up here. Between work, wife and kids I will be out hard over the next 90 days trying to make some more great finds. Then I will slow down in the hot humid summer months.

Also I found an item that looks like a pen. It comes apart and has wood inside of it. It's about 8 inches long about a inch thick and has a nice design on it. Looks early also 1850's I'd say. Do you guys know what it is.

Also found at the first site was a 1848 large cent to. Forgot to add that. A total of 3 coppers found last month. I found 2 my brother found one.

Once again thanks for viewing and comenting.

HH Jer

Oh,and Tnet member bronco found something like yours one time.... swagger stick," late 1700s to early 1800s. 5.2 grams, almost 2" long and 3/8" at its widest diameter. This conical tube, decorated with an ornate design with a crown in the center, was affixed to the point end of a wooden wand, known as a "swagger stick," typically about 18" long, used by officers to point to a sailor's bad dress habits during parade or at maps to show battle orders, etc.

This is a really good post, Jer!

I like how you always meticulously clean your finds and present them to all of us in your photos.

What a great assortment of finds. Love the 3-Center! I'm pretty sure a seated coin is in your near future! I think you can smell one too! :D

Congrats, and good continued success at your researched sites!

Congrats on that 3 cent piece, it's in great condition. ;D

Wow!!! That is a superb collection of finds!!! ( I wonder if the Large Copper is counterfeit?)
That is the most beautiful III-center i have seen!!!.... Awesome!!!!..........another jeremy.....

Awesome finds...This is one of the best posts I have seen in awhile. Looks like your research has paid off. Keep the posts coming.

Spectacular finds JerDFX

If this hunt is any indication, this is going to be a heck of a good season for you.

Thanks alot guys,

Yes, The 3 cent coins are very tough to come by. This one rang out with a nice little silvery toned pitch to it. I wasn't expecting it. Thought maybe a IH. Was a nice suprise.

RD, Yes I think you are spot on man. That one looks just like mine. If I would take it apart it would be about the same length as that one is. Mine still have a good 5 or 6 inch second tubbing pice conected to it.

The wood on the inside is in great shape. Neat relic to find. I love to find relics. And then learn about them. Thanks for the help.

Capt, I've found seateds before. But I'm looking for those pre 1850's one's. Man are they hard to find. I know they are out there though. Would really like to find a few pieces of spanish silver.

These old cabin sites definetly could hold them. Money was thin at those times though. Alot of time your lucky to find one or maybe 2 old coppers and that is it as far as coins.

The first site gave up only one copper a 1848. No other period coins were found at the first site. The second site gave up 6 indians 2 old coppers and a three cent piece.

Yes, Research is paying off. I like to hunt parks and such to for newer silver. But finding homesteads is the bread and butter of treasure hunting.

Lots of these sites out there untouched. Not many people finding them. Or have the time to do so either. I'm home all day and work nights. So I spend alot of time on the net.

Thanks Willie, I've had alot of great seasons but this may be a extra special one. I hope I've spent alot of time looking at maps. So I guess we'll see.

I got a few more nice areas that need to be checked. I've located a pre 1850's ghost town with 14 homesteads on the property. I hope no one has ever hunted them. I'll be back soon with more.

Thanks again guys

HH Jer

OH my gosh, Jeremy! 8) Not only are those finds the cat's meow, it's the way you clean them up and present them! Stunning job! :icon_king: Always a pleasure to see your posts!

Nana :)

And ya already got that baby out hunting too? :D You start 'em early, Jer!

Thanks alot guys.

Yes, Nana it was alot of work cleaning up all those finds. Some are done by hand others have been tumbled. Very time consuming. I like cleaning the finds almost as much as digging them.

Yes, gotta get them out there younge so it is in the blood. 2 Of my 3 boys were out today with me. They were digging holes probing the ground climbing trees etc.

I love when they go with me and I can let them be the first to touch a item. I teach them things all the time. I found a nice 1839 LC today with some other neat finds.

Once again thanks for all the replies and help everyone.

An amazing assortment of finds to be sure! Way to go!!!

The 3 cent piece (in my opinion) is one of the coolest US coins there are. Never found one, but would be SOOOOOO thrilled to some day.

BB, Thanks man. I thought the exact same thing. Looked like a cane tip when I found it. Nice little piece. Has a small part missing at the tip. But the wood on the inside looks great.

It comes apart. Needs a little more cleaning.

I've been looking for that thread, but can't find it. Those things were ID'ed--and I believe they were 1820s-30s militia items. Hopefully someone will help me out and post a link--and I'll keep looking through the Search feature on the forum too.
