Hey everyone,

This has been a really nice past 4 weeks hunting. Weather was great in Febuary here in Pa. Never hunted really in Feb until this yr.

I have to say my forum time has been limited. I check the site daily but just to read and answer pms and help people. I like to look at all the finds anymore.

I've been spending loads of time reading maps matching homesteads up and now with gps at hand making the finds come to life. I was able to locate 2 nice sites from a old map from 1876.

Gps put us spot on. There is going to be alot of great finds this yr now with the technology and the 7 yrs or so I've been studying maps. It is starting to pay and make sence.

This would take alot of time to really write up the bumps bruises miles walked and iron dug to tell the whole story. What I will say is that it's been a reward to have found and located these old settlers cabins.

They dated I'd say right around 1850 or so. Right after the federal period I would say. I actually was standing right ontop of one of the cabin sites almost walked away and said wait a minute lets just turn the units on and check.

Immediately everyone's units were hitting iron. Within minutes I had a 1830's buckle. We scoured the site and came up with some nice finds. Including at the site 6 indian heads. Witch the dates were good one's.

My brother got a super nice 1866 and a 1803 drapped bust large cent. I got 2 1868's a 1864 no L 1879 1881. Nice yrs to find. I also found a copper to need id for it. Looks to be about 29 mm and has a bust on the front. Looks like a liberty cap, drapped bust or jefferson head.

Not sure hope you copper experts out there Don in SJ can tell. Yesterday I went back to the sight with my not even 2 yr old son to see what else I could find. I hit a beautiful 1852 silver 3 cent piece.

I said about a month ago this would be the yr for pre 1850 silver. I am very close to closing in on that. I wanna hunt now for more coppers and early silvers. I got more than enough turn of the century and on items.

I got alot more sights lined up here. Between work, wife and kids I will be out hard over the next 90 days trying to make some more great finds. Then I will slow down in the hot humid summer months.

Also I found an item that looks like a pen. It comes apart and has wood inside of it. It's about 8 inches long about a inch thick and has a nice design on it. Looks early also 1850's I'd say. Do you guys know what it is.

Also found at the first site was a 1848 large cent to. Forgot to add that. A total of 3 coppers found last month. I found 2 my brother found one.

Once again thanks for viewing and comenting.

Hey everyone,

Thanks alot for all the help and great responses. Man, It always happens to me. I post my finds have to go to work shortly after and when I get home I don't know were to start.

Monty, Just using the whites dfx right now with 1400 DD coil. Never got the minelab. I am really pumped about this new unit from whites I seen here today.

I was just in the market for a new unit and was leaning towards a exp. I should stick with what I am good with I think. Would love to have a exp though to.

Civil man, You said it right. A day doesn't go by I'm not telling a story thinking of a lead calling a friend. Showing a find. Treasure hunting is my life really. Well not really but really lol.

I love the outdoors history and the good time spent with my brother and sons and family and friends.

Don, Thanks for looking on the copper. I have a thought about it here. My brother got a 1803 drapped bust that I Id easily. It was holed and I have it pictured uncleaned in the first pic. I haven't seen it cleaned yet but was told it flaked away pretty good.

Now for my copper. It was smooth when found. So I knew it was worn well. Well the back of the coin has no detail at all maybe a faint sign of a wreath and one cent.

But someone with a pin etched on the back what looks like a W on the coin. Here is what I think. It was almost worn away right. Then someone tried to take a needle and scratch the bust back onto the coin.

It even looks like it was done to the coin. Crazy gouged line for the bust. You can see it. Maybe it was a worn old colonial copper and someone tried to counterfeit it to something to pass it off again.

It just doesn't match any bust but damn near looks like alot of them.

Thanks again for the time of looking. Your coppers are really awesome man.

The 3 center was a great little find. I actually beleive this was a little dissapointed it wasn't a halfdime. I have yet to find a halfdime. I got 3 3 centers though.

It's rediculous at how things go. I knew the cond was nice though and that brought a nice smile to my face. Nicest one I've got so far. I forget how little these coins are.

I knew instantly when I saw it was some kind of old silver.

Thanks again everyone

Sorry Guys,

I need to reply again. There were like 35 messages before I got to write one from being at work all night.

BB, Thanks man. I thought the exact same thing. Looked like a cane tip when I found it. Nice little piece. Has a small part missing at the tip. But the wood on the inside looks great.

It comes apart. Needs a little more cleaning.

Neil, I iron is a pain at times. I checked on another site right. It was on the map. It was loaded with iron. I found one toe tap and a dresser draw handle. My brother got a old spoon.

Some sites I think are just to hard to hunt unless you really block out the iron or listen through it. I listen through it. The dfx and the tone id will make silver ring in the iron good. My brothers copper sang out nice in a hole mixed with iron.

He uses the stock coil. I use the 1400 and smoke him on every hunt. I have far more hrs in the field though. But he does well he should I taught him. Big coil makes a big difference.

Use the eeprom high pro program. It's a hot program on the unit.

Thanks again guys
