***1864 "L" Indian Head ***DOUBLE DIE*** My oldest & rarest coin yet

O.K. Folks, I'm having a serious silver slump here in good old NC. Last weeks mid-1800's house looked like a dream, but not one silver coin. Not even a Rosie. :-\
Today I started another house down the road a bit. This one was built in 1843, sits in a wealthy area, and was built by a doctor.
Right off the bat I dug two IH's. One was an 1880, and the other an 1864 (semi key date & my oldest so far).
Again, NO SILVER!!! :'( If these old IH's were still there, I would think the property has never been detected. :icon_scratch:
The dark black soil is soft as butter and you can literally push your digger a foot deep in areas with no problem.
I dug lots of rusty iron, nails, pull tabs, clad quarters, dimes, and nickels.
I was started having second thoughts about my machine, but if I'm digging deep clad and other relics, so I would think if there was silver to be had I would find it.
If my Tesoro found a tiny half dime in a field, then certainly it should be able to find silver in a yard. :dontknow:
My only thoughts are: (1) the silver is too deep, or (2) the cold temps are not allowing the machine to operate properly. ???
WHAT DO YOU FOLKS THINK??? Any input?
After watching Captn Dan constantly dig up deep silver I'm starting to wonder if I should get me a Minelab SE. :icon_scratch:
This was my first attempt and I still have lots to cover, so we'll see what happens. It's not easy getting permission to detect these old houses, and maybe I get my hopes up too high with visions of sugar plums silver dancing in my head. ;D
Now that I got my crying done, here's my finds:

*1864 and 1880 IH's.

*Wheats- 1912, 30 , 35 (x2) , 40, 51, 52.

*Railroad nail/spike with a large "G" and "36" on the head. Is that 1936?

*Tootsietoy Jeep & Hotwheels "Sand Drifter" (1974)

*Tiny cast metal toys- Tophat , plane, train.

*Asst'd lantern parts, pocket knife, keys, etc.

Thanks for looking,
MM

Doug, a very sincere congrats on the great find. I am glad I gave your post a second look and recognized the signs of the "L" coin. Way to go picking up on the repunched date. I can't quite tell if it's double or triple punched, but either way, fantastic.

The doubling I see on the "A" in America is yet another issue, that is machine doubling caused by worn out dies. This is evident by the "under" "A" being larger than the "A" on top of it. Where if you look at the "18" in the date, they are the same size numbers, just in different locatons on the coin.

DO NOT USE WATER OR A Q-TIP. THIS WILL SCRATCH THE COIN. I suggest you have it authenticated, graded and slabbed by ANACS, they will grade it and slab it, even with environmental damage, where chances are PCGS or NGC will send it back unslabbed due to environmental damage. You can call any of the 3 above and ask for referrences on who can properly conserve/preserve the coin in a manor that will not effect the value, if the coin is valued enough by the enhancement to off set the cost of the conservation. NGC used NCS (Numismatic Conservation Services) to conserve the coins recovered from the SS Republic. http://www.ncscoin.com/gallery/conserved/ss_republic/index.asp

Joe,
I owe you lunch (bar-b-que w/cheese sandwiches). If you hadn't of chimed in on my other post, I wouldn't have relooked for that "L", and it was when I was looking at the "L" that I noticed the double stamping. It stuck out like a sore thumb on the "1" and "8".
I'll check into getting it graded & slabbed. I won't try cleaning it. I know the coins not worth a fortune, but being a CW era coin with the "L" and double stamping really make it special to me.
Thanks again Joe.

Re: *** 1864 "L" IH with double die stamping ???*** Calling all coin experts!!!

Outstanding find!! You can't ask for more in a dug coin - full liberty, rare variation, and doubling visible. That is excellent. I hope you are able to get it properly preserved and managed to get a good price if you decide to sell.

Congrats!!

Re: *** 1864 "L" IH with double die stamping ???*** Calling all coin experts!!!

Doug, that's a better find than any of those silver coins you're complaining about not finding!! ;D ;D

I didn't catch the "L" on your '64 in your previous post. You actually looked up the right coin in the Redbook the first time, and you didn't even know it. ;D ;D

Very Nice!!

***A big "THANK YOU" to all of you for the great comments.***
You made my day. :icon_king:
I'll be looking into getting it graded and possibly slabbed. I doubt I will ever find a coin like this again. I think finding a double stamped coin is super hard to do, so it really means a lot to me. Also being a CW era IH has special meaning to me too. Sherman's troops literally marched up the street only about 100' from where I found this coin in front of the 1843 house. I'm not saying it was dropped by one of the troops, but the fact that they were there really makes me wonder. :icon_scratch:
Thanks,
MM

From the Cherry Pickers guide, page 46

Repunched Date, not a doubled die. Picture is identical to yours. Listed as Breen #1962; Snow-1
Value XF $175

Re: *** 1864 "L" IH with double die stamping ???*** Calling all coin experts!!!

Yeah, great find. Big deal. Still ain't no colonial... :tard: :tongue3:

Awesome find brother Shorty - I don't want to hear you complaining about not finding silver for awhile... ;D

Re: *** 1864 "L" IH with double die stamping ???*** Calling all coin experts!!!

Awesome coin. I would look into having it restored. Looks like there is still quite a bit of detail covered up.

Re: *** 1864 "L" IH with double die stamping ???*** Calling all coin experts!!!

That's a great find. Here's an extract of the current PCGS population report for that RPD (repunched date) variety. There are two documented RPD varieties ... one doubled and one tripled. It appears yours is the double punch. This population report doesn't include examples slabbed by other services.
PCGS_Pop64L.JPG

Any determination of grade will take into account the environmental damage. PCGS just started their "genuine" service which means if it is genuine, it won't come in a bodybag. It will be holdered as genuine without a grade.

NGC operates a conservation service for rare coins with problems. It's called NCS (Numismatic Conservation Service). You may want to consider them to "conserve" the coin.
