I invited RWSNC (Bob) to MD with me today. We hit an 1830's house in town that turned out to be a waste of an hour. It had been detected before we were told, and all we found was some clad. :'(
We then moved on to the plantation house I've been working. Bob went one way, and I finished my 2nd gridding of the front yard. I found a gold plated ring, coin purse latch, and a wheat.
I then started gridding off the side yard. I hit a musket ball right by the side of the house, a few more wheats, and a beautiful
Catholic pendant with "1830" on it right at the base of an oak tree. (Sorry Mirage, you missed it Buddy ;) ).

RWSNC was hoping for some silver coins today, (me too) but it was not to be. He did score a nice large thin button though that I think may be Colonial. It has a neat primitive stamped design on the front. "Congrats Bob".

I'm sure there will be more old coins to be found, but I'll have to work for them now since I'm almost done with the yard. Next stop, the other two pasture areas.

Today's finds.

*Beautiful Italian Catholic pendant with an "1830" date on it.
Can anyone translate the meaning of these words?
Do you think this is actually from 1830, or is there a reason that date is on this religious pendant?

*Gold plated ring. Ladies or kids?

*Wheats - 1912 , 18 , 56D

*Musket ball

*Old fork - Age?
All I can make out on the back is "Schaeffe". Any ideas on this one?

*1997 vaccine tag.

*Long lead piece that is folded in half and each side has a hole that lines up. No idea on this mystery item?

*Coin purse latch

*Two pieces of "what's it"? When I dug them up, the black piece (brass) was fitted on top of the brown (copper) piece.
Any guesses on this one? (besides "junk" that is ;) )

Thanks for looking,
MM

The button could be a Tombac, spunback type from late 1700's, hard to tell from the photo, but if it is very smooth to the touch, cleans easily and has concentric rings on the reverse side, than that is basically what it is. A large majority of tombac types have designs etched on them, usually they are very hard to see unless the button is cleaned thoroughly and they never have a backmark on them. :)

Don

Thanks Don.
That's what I was thinking it was. The button is smooth.

Bob,
Can you make out any rings on the back?

I didn't think there were any rings on the back, but I just looked at it and you can definitely see some concentric rings. Thanks for the info Don.

See, I told you that sucker was old. ;) Great find. I'm a little embarrassed to tell folks that you found it in the front yard after I've been through there TWICE. ::) It must be that Minelab you're swinging? ;)
Congrats on a very nice button.

Thanks for the ID Don.

You're really hitting it hard this year Doug. Only a few months into the season and already you have a whole years worth of finds. The 1830 date on that catholic pendant is definitely a commemorative date of some sort. I've turned up a few of those myself and the first one I found, I was thinking the same thing. Keep at it brother and the finds will keep rolling in for you.

Here is a pic of some of those 1830 pendants I found. (the gold colored ones are not really gold. They are made from a very light metal.)

Those whistle looking things--are they clay? What do you figure the date of usage on them? Any idea?
Great finding that religious medal. Congratulations.

The Virgin Mary medal, which is often referred to as the Miraculous Medal, can be found in an array of gold, silver, pewter, and white gold designs. Sister Catherine Laboure's apparition that inspired the minting of the medal occurred on July 18th, 1830. This young nun supposedly spoke at length with the Virgin Mary, who gave her a very specific mission. Months later, Mary reappeared to Sister Catherine and presented a design for a medallion.

Nice finds, buddy!! I've got quite a few of those Mary pendants myself.

Nice hunt and finds MM! The date on the religious pendant is probably a commemorative date as suggested. The whatsits look like cane tips. HH, Mike

Buddy 'Ole Palster,

How ya doing? I see that you are still swinging with that typical passion.

Nice relics! That 1775 2-reales is waiting out there! ;) :D ;D

Keep the passion high!

EV,
This pendant sure was a fooler. I thought I had found 1830's silver. ;D You have quite a collection of them going. Congrats.

STYRKER-
No they are metal. PBK just ID'd them for me above.

DAN,
You probably have quite a few with the amount of goodies you find in those Calif parks. ;)

KIRK,
Thanks Dude. Is Bone Dry fired up and ready to hit the coppa fields? Looking forward to your guys finds this year. Hope to see a great year of some banner finds. Remember this picture? ;D

Nice load of goodies MM. I love to find those old pendants regardless of how old or what they are made of...they're just neat to dig up. haven't gotten out yet this year except for one time when I found the full coin purse full of "almost silver" coins. It's cold...snowing every couple of days...melting...freezing all over again. The weather just isn't cooperating...but I know hunting days are just around the corner. I think my hunt time will be about 50% of what it was last year for me because of work...but I will hunt every chance I get. For now all I can do is stare at the Harley...stare at my detectors... and walk my dog.

Thanks SF. Hopefully you'll be out there soon. This has really been a rough winter in a lot of areas. At least you have a Harley to stare at. ;) I just have the detectors and a dog. ;D

Hay All,

This is Latin for "Queen conceived with original sin", and probably has "ora pro nobis" - or "O.P.N." - which is Latin for "Pray for us". Usually in English this is translated "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee"...

This is a popular Catholic devotion based on a vision of Mary the Blessed Mother to St. Catherine Laboure' from 1830. This is considered "private revelation", and although approved by the Church as a genuine vision from the Blessed Virgin, it is optional for Catholics to believe. (As opposed to public revelation - as was revealed by Jesus Christ and the apostles in the New Testament - which all Catholics are required to believe as true.)

All Catholics are encouraged to pray to Mary for her intercession as it will bring many graces from God.

Just thought I would add my .02 cents

HH
