1788 Vermont Copper! Rare Variety??- Video Added!

I finally got out today and tried my new White's TRX. The fluorescent cap came in handy because I left it behind after my last dig of the day. First dig was a deep nickel which turned out to be a 1904 Libery Head, pretty beat up but glad to get a date. The next was the copper...not a good signal at all, but glad I dug this deep signal. It must have been on it's edge! Also got a bird band (still working on the number to track it)
and a tiny silver coin which is likely to be trime.

Very nice Vermont copper! Congrats!

wow! i wish i could find something that old! whats a florescent cap?

Notice the color of the battery cover on the TRX? Makes it easier to find in the brush if left behind (like I did on Saturday!)

Good point. I lost one last year and went back and still couldn't find it. As LED's take so little energy it's a shame they don't have one with an on/off switch that lights an LED so if you loose it you can go back near dark and find it.

Awesome Vermont copper. :occasion14: Some really nice finds turning up early in the year and that one definitely makes the list. Congrats!

Even better when you find out you have a rare coin. This is my 3rd R-5 or better coin!

Hey Neil, finally getting around to checking out your find. Congrats on a rare copper!

BTW, due to the R5 rating, and decent condition, I don't see why this can't make banner!

Hi Neil, very nice recovery. Question? I have been finding quite a few bird bands. Why are you looking to id them? Is it useful to someone and is there a data base out there to id them.

Thanks and again sweeeet find!

In answer to your question, it definitely can be helpful to bird researchers who are studying things such as bird migration. This one turned out to be a pigeon band, so it was more for the owner to ID his birds.

The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Bird Banding Laboratory site compiles info for the USGS database. If you report a band you will get info about the bird, such as species, date and location tagged. You'll also get a certificate of appreciation suitable for framing!

Hey good 1 Neil! Congrats..........Hogge

Ironically it took me more than 10 years and hundreds of large coppers before I got this one, my first positively identifiable state copper.

Hundreds of large coppers? I've found ONE so far. Not fair to find a Vermont copper in PA! Bring that back here to New England! Great find, though!

Actually this one was dug in New Jersey. Ironically, I'm still looking for my first NJ copper!
