I had a couple hours after the rain yesterday. Went to the old mill site where I've found 18 early coppers and a beautiful real. The signals are long gone and I'm basically just digging out nails trying to find some masked targets. The 1753 was only 3" down. Just covered by iron. The 1749 was maybe 8" down. I also found my first flint which is a cool first for me. Had big plans for some new areas today but it's pouring rain and I have to kayak in. So I'm glad I went out for a quick hunt yesterday

Now a question for the coin guys. I noticed this farthing from the same site is missing the crossbar on the second A. Is this pretty common?

Ah thank goodness for some colonial posts! More excellent coppers Abe, but that farthing looks like it's from the future. 7749 to be exact. I can't quite find any info until Capt Kirt beams me the info from the future.

Until then, keep up the awesome colonial future finds.

Scrappy - out.

Those are superb examples of KG coppers Abe. Glad that site continues to produce for you, and that you found the time in your busy schedule to get out for a little digging. Keep 'em coming man ....

Nice copper throw the little coil on the T2 and watch the magic in iron..The key is using 0 disc and listen for little faint beeps in the iron 2+ MODE..

Nice condition on that one!

Spink does seem to list errors like this and it's not there so I guess there's a couple of options. The first is a genuine die struck the coin and either something happened like a filled die error prevented the cross bar from appearing, or something happened to the coin to remove it. The other option, and I think is probably more likely... it's counterfeit and the counterfeiter mistakenly used the V punch when making the die when he meant to use the A. Things like that are very common on counterfeit halfpennies and farthings, only usually it's because they are missing a letter and have to make do with what they have. I guess there's a 3rd option... you just found the first of an unlisted unknown error, but you'd have to have some real wishful thinking going on to believe that... and it would be a whole lot of work to get such a thing recognized. I guess maybe there's a 4th option... maybe the mint made so many mistakes they stopped listing the small ones as there was too many, but that doesn't seem too likely. Anyway, those are the initial thoughts from a very beat - sick - brain... but I did dig a Navy button today on a 1 hour hunt. Ain't pretty but something... very tough right now to find anywhere to dig.

Thanks for your thoughts bud. I kind of figured this stuff just happened all the time and was somewhat common. Scrappy pointed out that the 1 in the date looks kind off odd as well. I have an awful lot to learn about these early coppers

holy coin that thing is pristine! How'd you clean it?

When they are in that condition it's too easy. I dry brushed it then put it in warm peroxide. I don't continue heating the hp and returning it. I put it in the warm peroxide then leave it there. Sometimes for days depending on the dreaded coast disease(thick crust on some coppers on the Maine coast.) the cold hp will continue breaking down the crust slowly if necessary. That farthing only needed a quick bath and was beautiful

Wow those KGs are incredible. Congrats

I think Iron Patch nailed it with the "inverted V instead of an A". The top of the normal A is angled off to the right:ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1468167625.186004.jpg

Inverted, the other "A" in question has the top angled to the left, which doesn't match an A at all, along with missing the cross bar. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1468167763.018913.jpg

Really great finds Abe, that's quite a site you have there. Good luck with your ID on the coin, hopefully it's something rare and valuable!

Ah good eye brother. I never noticed it at first but just happened to catch it the other day. It seems lots of these counterfeits are pretty common. I'm just happy to possibly have one in such great condition. Thanks for taking the time to really check into it

Hey the closest I'll ever get to a colonial copper is googling them on the interweb haha. Besides, finding things is half the fun, researching them is the other half. I guess I'm mooching 50% of the fun by seeing people's finds and learning about them. I can't wait until I get my bag of finds from England sent to me, I will have tons of research to do. Keep me busy all winter.

I assume you mean Coins of England?
They only list common errors or some hand picked rare ones. Its not exclusive, you need more specialist books for that. (There are many variants of coins not listed in this book)

Man great early coppers and group finds

I'd dig nails 22 shells anything that broke a threshold at that site lol

Keep it up man
