Hello tnetters, I don't post very often, I'm more of a sandbagger! I hunt with Brian W who has posted some of his finds here before. Today we hit an area we've had our eye on for quite some time and it didn't disappoint. An hour into the hunt Bri comes walking down a hill towards me with an incredible button.... I'll wait for him to post that if he chooses to. It was quite a nice button to say the least. Anyway I'd been digging shotgun shell after shotgun shell, flashing, lead pieces, can tops etc. With little light left in the day I found a complete colonial shoe buckle, very nice shape, my day was made, I was happy with just that. The sun was dropping behind the horizon and I was content with my buckle and an undetermined Indian head penny. Just before i was ready to leave I got a decent signal but it was reading only and inch deep, I kicked the leaves and pine needles aside to get to hard earth. I swung the area of bare dirt and the signal was gone. I checked the debris pile of leaves and pine needles... I couldn't believe my eyes when i saw the 16! This coin was barely below the surface. Unfortunately I have some light scratches on it from brushing the leaves and pine needles away. I have no idea what variety it is or if it's a counterfeit. Brian told me to post it here and Iron Patch would be the guy to ID it. Anyway, we had a great day and it was amazing to find this coin.

It's way past my bedtime, but when I saw a 1652 up top I read thru the 6 pages.
Congrats Fog on finding this near unique piece !
Safaris seem to be the Mass silver magnets, (I happen to have some for sale, new and used)
and I'll add that it's about time you posted something :laughing7: Best wishes and HH.
If you sell, you'll regret it. trust me on this.

An absolutely phenomenal coin. That's what we're all looking for! That it was so shallow is also amazing... Well done sir, WELL DONE! Congrats!

I hope it is real! I can't imagine finding something that awesome that is around 400 years old.

Absolutely Outstanding! Nothing more needs to be said other than congratulations...

Fog, for your reference, here is the description of Noe-17 varieties, took me a while but I found it in one of my Ma Silver books. Don't rush into 'sending it away', again congrats and thank the erosion for washing that piece out of the hillside, My two Shillings were also surface finds. HH!

The best news I gain from that and all that has been said is the thought of being counterfeit does not decrease the value because of it's solid placing in the books (along with the other 3 counterfeits). I'm curious what it's worth, but since there's so few you very well might have to base the price by looking at other sales and taking the many factors into account, and just making a guess.

omg that's the stuff I aspire to find ! please tell that was not found in Amesbury MA LOL ! awesome find

Thanks for the info Steelhead Will! I can't believe you've found 4 mass silvers... that's crazy. Not sending it away either, I will hold onto it. NFS! HH

Fog, It's really nice to see this example found!~ The 'Hydra Tree' diagnostic is so different in style from any others of the oak series, and the hatchmarks rather than beading... I will now be able to field ID this when I find one :laughing7:
As far as the silver I've recovered, yours is a whole different ballgame, Quality trumps Quantity.
Please continue investigating this site thoroughly. No reason why there would not be more items of interest.
IP, though the 17s are thought to not be a product of the Boston Mint, they are definitely classified as 'Mass Silvers', and as you know much desired.
Nicely made too I might add, I wonder where the incentive to make these lied, they are not considerably underweight,
on average they seem to be a few grains heavier than other 6ers.... just looking for the same profit margin Hull was making I guess.(about 5%).
I would vote this 'Find of The Year'. Congrats, Best Wishes and HH, Herbie.

I'm not impressed FOG. Find 2 and I will be impressed.

Well I think its a GREAT find Fog.... and I envy you. Congratulations and HH in future! Some folks would b***h if you hung them with a new rope. Come to think of it......

Hey. What's going on ?
I just watched "Pawn Stars" on TV tonight. A woman brought in a 1652 sixpence for Rick to buy. (Season 4 Episode 52)
Is that a coin-incidence or what?

And I bet he knew the value without an expert or opening a book! :)

Would that be what he wanted to pay, or what it was worth. Or should I say what he could get away with paying.

That is a big part of why pawn guys have to pay low... because they don't know enough about certain things to pay what they're worth. That's doesn't always work in their favor because lowballers or people who are just cheap in general lose good deals when they can't steal it. I'd rather make a lot of deals at a reasonable profit than far fewer at a great profit. This is why good dealers last and the so called crooks tend to fade away. That said, 99.9% of any type of dealer is not going to turn down a great offer so it really is up to the buyer to be sure.

Quote...so it really is up to the buyer to be sure. Or the seller to no what he has. The amount of people I have seen walk up to the table and ask, how much, and do you know what it is. You can almost see the dealers eyes rolling like a fruit machine.
