Hello tnetters, I don't post very often, I'm more of a sandbagger! I hunt with Brian W who has posted some of his finds here before. Today we hit an area we've had our eye on for quite some time and it didn't disappoint. An hour into the hunt Bri comes walking down a hill towards me with an incredible button.... I'll wait for him to post that if he chooses to. It was quite a nice button to say the least. Anyway I'd been digging shotgun shell after shotgun shell, flashing, lead pieces, can tops etc. With little light left in the day I found a complete colonial shoe buckle, very nice shape, my day was made, I was happy with just that. The sun was dropping behind the horizon and I was content with my buckle and an undetermined Indian head penny. Just before i was ready to leave I got a decent signal but it was reading only and inch deep, I kicked the leaves and pine needles aside to get to hard earth. I swung the area of bare dirt and the signal was gone. I checked the debris pile of leaves and pine needles... I couldn't believe my eyes when i saw the 16! This coin was barely below the surface. Unfortunately I have some light scratches on it from brushing the leaves and pine needles away. I have no idea what variety it is or if it's a counterfeit. Brian told me to post it here and Iron Patch would be the guy to ID it. Anyway, we had a great day and it was amazing to find this coin.

I thought it was totally amazing, that "I" could immediately pick out so many differences in this coin from the 17. The "1" being the most obvious. After reading The Fog's last post, how can you not be happy for the guy!? This kind of find is what makes us all want to keep digging! Just goes to show, and I have always said, you never know what you're going to find, or where. Wish it was me!:laughing9:

"You" should actually read the thread because several differences were listed... in point form I might add... and with pics! So all your credit should get bumped back a few pages. :laughing7:

Awesome news Fog....I never had a doubt it was rare....I am so happy you found this coin...it is amazing ..and thanks to everyone evolved in the identification...Congrats

I was just going to post that, he should take the "I" out, by the time he chimed in the 1 was pointed out about 9 hours earlier by Tobias, along with other discrepancies, that is what triggered contacting C4, since our references were not going to get an answer...................Give Tobias credit for seeing all those differences! Also some credit to l Cutler for pointing out the beaded area under EW being out of whack.............

Quoting Mr Salmon, the author of the Mass Silver coin book:
"Fascinating and amazing coin, and, I strongly believe, a circulating counterfeit (and I've thus classified these scarce pieces 4-X). All of the "17" subvarieties and die states (as well as the Noe 18/5-X which followed) are extremely anomalous and differ markedly from regular mint issues. "

Rather big words he used but as was pointed out previously, first clue evidently was the 1 being a style not used by regular mint, not sure what he really considers for other differences, not well versed at all in Mass silver, odds of finding one in my area are rather low, but possible.

I'm starting to think he purposely writes in double talk so we'll all go out and by the book... because I think it would be much clearer to understand!

The 1 is what made me quit the first night it was posted. Because it was obviously different, but I couldn't find pics of the others. I didn't bother trying to find more differences, because there was no point at the time.... and i was beat! :)

you know that this is an amazing find when fellow TNeter's are claiming to be the first to notice unique things about it. Congrats on a once in a lifetime find. Keep us posted on what you decide to do with it.

"CLARIFICATION" Not taking credit.....Kind of came into the thread late...... on either page 3 or 4. Didn't really read much before that. Meant I was amazed, just by the dies I saw personally, that I could see all these differences right away. Usually it takes a while to pick stuff out....that's all I meant.

Fog-

I haven't posted in a while, but I’m not going to miss the opportunity to congratulate you on a fantastic find. Welcome to the Mass Silver Club! Awesome find! Awesome coin! As I am human with emotion and all, I couldn’t help to feel a bit of “Why can’t I find that?” But after reading your latest comments, I couldn’t be happier for you. You earned it. You deserve it.

Thanks for the extra info Don :occasion14:

ok, you still get your 5% share. ;)

Hey Fog, Ive lurked on this site for a long time and finally joined just to be able to congratulate you! Cheers to your find, a piece of epic American history. Hope you find some other treasures at that spot too!

Not sure if you're going to sell it, but from what I've seen at auction its kind of like finding a brand new car. Congrats!
