Still in disbelief right now after tonights hunt at my best site for early stuff. Accomplished two things I never really thought I had much chance of doing. A hammered English silver and a 16th century one at that:headbang: It also appears to have been bent like what they call love tokens over in England. Thanks for looking and so glad I could share my excitement with everyone

There was a crooked man,
and he walked a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat,
which caught a crooked mouse,
and they all lived together in a little crooked house.

Although this was first put in print in 1842, there are some that think its origins are linked to Love Tokens. We will never know. Stiles were often out of the way meeting points for lovers.

To find that in the U.S. is beyond rare.

Congrats on a FANTASTIC find - 1500's Silver found in the US - incredible ! :occasion14:

And yes ... a Banner find !

Congratulations on an intriguing find.
I had to double-check your location because I didn't remember you living in "Jolly old England". You may be happy to know you don't, by the way.:laughing7:

I'm guessing by bending it they could feel the difference between the special one and any other that they might have in their pocket. No name or initials on it would keep people out of trouble with their family in some situations.

I've heard that catchy ditty before. Now it makes sense.

I did have to search for "Stiles" on Google-
"1. a set of steps or rungs in a wall or fence to allow people, but not animals, to pass over. 2. short for turnstile. Collins English Dictionary."

Holy cow thats old....congrats buddy....your on fire !! Congrats on one hell of a year also !!

I've seen a few of them show up in the Tidewater area of Virginia, but I think this is the first I've seen come out of Maryland. Love the way the date pops on that one. You got my Banner Vote.

By the way, my oldest site out here in SW PA has produced a 1661 Hammered Hungarian coin and a very worn 1697 English sixpence bent into a love token. I don't think I'll top either of those unless I go across the pond.

Toasted......you may have pulled off the impossible and found a colonial silver that is cooler than your Tree Shilling. Congrats! Banner vote is in.

A stile in the Countryside just outside of a rural village or town would be a good place to met. Easy to describe, everyone walking knew where it was, but normally out of sight.

You may one day.

You may one day.
I had plans to detect in England back in 2001. I had a business trip scheduled to a supplier in Portsmouth and one of my contacts in Portsmouth had made arrangements for me to detect a farm next to Winchester Hill, which he said was a very historical site. I had planned to take some vacation time after the business trip, but unfortunately my plane was scheduled to take off Sept 12, 2001, and we all know what happened the day before...
Still on my bucket list...

WOW! She's a long way from home in both distance and time. Congrats on a once in a lifetime find!

Why would one be found here at all? Colonial coin collector?

Easy. Jamestown in Virginia was founded in 1607. Maryland in 1634 and on and on. People brought money they had with them. I have found two Elizabeth I shillings so far in Maryland. I found a 14th and 15th century coin in Maryland right out of old colonial sites. These sites also produced bellarmines and such.

Very nice! Congrats! My Banner vote is in.

Banner for sure! Simply amazing in the US!!! Wow. So awesome it has the date so clear!

incredible. i probably swam or waded over this coin hundreds of times in my youth. happy to break my banner-voting cherry on this ridiculous coin. The fact that it's a love token cranks the knob from 10 to 11.

If only these coins could talk. What a journey this coin must have taken. A clipper ship and a new world.
Banner vote sent.
