I researched 2 old places last night. The 1st used to be an old hospital dating back to the late 1800's. I went and asked permission and got a firm " NO, NOT A GOOD IDEA " ! So I went to an old school ( torn down now ) I knocked on a door, no answer. I saw a realty sign and called the number, spoke to a guy but he didn't know who owned the piece I was on. It wasn't posted and was abandoned so I dug for just a bit. A lady showed up and said " ma'am, do you know this is private property ? " I said no, I'm very sorry. We talked for a minute but she said to leave... That was the first time I was ran off and I'm sure it won't be the last. She calmed her tone down after I apologized at least 6 times but I won't go back there. :)
I went to a field I've been at before and found this stuff. Lesson learned ! Ha ha

Yep........ just don't like to hunt without getting permission. I have been given permission by one family member and made to leave by another ..... ha ha.

At least she realized that I did try. I even have a plat book but didn't cover that area. Next time I'll do better :)
Having one member say ok though and another say no would be frustrating.

I for one will not hunt a property unless I have permission. Being vacant does not mean property is public property. I know of property that is owned by logging companies, that allow hunting and snowmobile trails to run on the property. That doesnt mean i can dig there or do anything else. It is an agreement between the dnr and the property owner for those activities only.
If there are no tresspassong signs or markings anywhere you can be arrested for going on that property.

I understand that completely. I tried to find out who owned it and THERE WERE NO SIGNS AT ALL. The landowner knew I wasn't there to hurt anything, I just wanted to dig a little and she did say that at least I tried to find out who it belonged to. This is not normal practice for me but a historic school stood on those grounds. She should have it posted and I bet she will now. That is up to the property owner to post their land. Many places are abandoned for good. I had no way of knowing.

I beg to differ but you were wrong digging there. Doesnt matter if you could find who the owner was or not. If you didnt have permission and it isnt private property no one has a right to go on it, even if it once held an old school. Folks get shot for doing that in some parts of the world.

Lighten up some.... This is a small town area and most folks are willing to give you a chance to at least explain yourself before they shoot :) when it was all said and done, no harm was done and she was polite, as I was to her.

Digging without permission gives us all a bad name. :nono:

Please understand that I always have until today and again, I tried to find the property owner to get permission. If they would of had signs posted I NEVER would have stepped on there. As before, lesson learned on both ends I think !

Yes, permission or not ?, it's the code, comes with every detector.
There is no "grey area" and nothing to do with what once stood there.

Woods i understand what you are saying. Witht hats aid, we follow a code and do not tresspass. I hope you dont feel i am over reacting or picking a fight. The problem is i have sent his before and there are areas near me that are off limits because people did that.

Metal detecting code of ethics

I WILL ALWAYS CHECK FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY AND LOCAL LAWS BEFORE SEARCHING. IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO “ KNOW THE LAW “

I WILL RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY AND WILL NOT ENTER PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHOUT THE OWNER’S PERMISSION. WHERE POSSIBLE, SUCH PERMISSION WILL BE IN WRITING.

I WILL TAKE CARE TO REFILL ALL HOLES AND TRY NOT TO LEAVE ANY DAMAGE.

I WILL REMOVE AND DISPOSE OF ANY AND ALL TRASH AND LITTER THAT I FIND.

I WILL APPRECIATE AND PROTECT OUR INHERITANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES, WILDLIFE AND PRIVATE PROPERTY.

I WILL AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE HOBBY, USE THOUGHTFULNESS, CONSIDERATION AND COURTESY AT ALL TIMES.

I WILL WORK TO HELP BRING UNITY TO OUR HOBBY BY WORKING WITH ANY ORGANIZATION OF ANY GEOGRAPHIC AREA THAT MAY HAVE PROBLEMS THAT WILL LIMIT THEIR ABILITY TO PEACEFULLY PURSUE THE HOBBY.

I WILL LEAVE GATES AS FOUND.

I WILL BUILD FIRES IN DESIGNATED OR SAFE PLACES ONLY.

I WILL REPORT TO THE PROPER ANY INDIVIDUALS WHO ENTER AND OR REMOVE ARTIFACTS FROM FEDERAL PARKS OR STATE PRESERVES.

Here are my ethics:

1. Get permission
2. Fill the holes
3. Ask if the landowner wants some relics we find
4. Provide landowner with research of the property (old land maps, insurance maps, micro-film articles, etc) <--- they loveee this and will tell everyone about it, then your phone may ring with a neb. calling asking you to come over and relic hunt and research their property... <--- have had this happen numerous times.

Can you tell us/me more about micro film? I'm guessing its a library based resource??? I would love to have more research tools. I'm bound to fire insurance maps at the moment...

Oh come on now... Lighten up. She did say lesson learned... Yeah? I bet she didn't post up here for a lecture. It's for the rest of us to learn and not make the same mistake. Like what's posted, some people can get shot in some parts of the world.. I'll definitely be very careful in my hobby when I travel..

Looks like you found a bunch of coins and I know you had fun doing it. =)

I've been kicked out a few time. No big deal. It's usually someone at a public school who doesn't know what they're talking about.
I was kicked out of the local public high school by a local cop who said it was private property which to me was ludicrous.

In my younger days I probably would have got myself arrested. I just left instead and I've been back to that school numerous times since with no problems. I did however email the principal and got permission just in case that same cop sees me again.

Don't sweat it.

I'm looking forward to your next post. :)

Regardless of how the day started; it sure ended with a pocket full of change.

I am in east central area. I have permission to hit several corn fields when it's harvest time however I read another thread about the stalks making it too hard to swing your coil. I'll wait and see. I don't know the history of these fields yet but sure want to find out. Thanks for the info on maps, those are good options to try.

Eh Woodswoman it's a easy enough mistake to do an old school that's abandoned as the school district still might own it and then basically it's public property. Coming from a small town is always a easy fit and a sorry and politeness goes a long ways in mending a fence. Good luck in the future in gaining the ok's for hunting.
