I researched 2 old places last night. The 1st used to be an old hospital dating back to the late 1800's. I went and asked permission and got a firm " NO, NOT A GOOD IDEA " ! So I went to an old school ( torn down now ) I knocked on a door, no answer. I saw a realty sign and called the number, spoke to a guy but he didn't know who owned the piece I was on. It wasn't posted and was abandoned so I dug for just a bit. A lady showed up and said " ma'am, do you know this is private property ? " I said no, I'm very sorry. We talked for a minute but she said to leave... That was the first time I was ran off and I'm sure it won't be the last. She calmed her tone down after I apologized at least 6 times but I won't go back there. :)
I went to a field I've been at before and found this stuff. Lesson learned ! Ha ha

Woods i understand what you are saying. Witht hats aid, we follow a code and do not tresspass. I hope you dont feel i am over reacting or picking a fight. The problem is i have sent his before and there are areas near me that are off limits because people did that.

Point taken and you've made it loud and clear. Hopefully if anyone else so much as QUESTIONS an area, they won't go there. This was a learning experience for me and maybe many others who are beginning this fun hobby.

Eh Woodswoman it's a easy enough mistake to do an old school that's abandoned as the school district still might own it and then basically it's public property. Coming from a small town is always a easy fit and a sorry and politeness goes a long ways in mending a fence. Good luck in the future in gaining the ok's for hunting.

Thank you :) Old schools and anything like that that housed many people have always been a great interest. I think I can safely say " it's in our blood " lol
I will have many more good digs in good places and I look forward to it.

I usually only go by 8 of the 10 detector ethics that were shown. Always do your best to get permission..:BangHead:

You should've brought a back hoe and offered a 80/20 split

Well I say you learned your lesson the hard way and won't make the same mistake twice. I'm usually the one who is hung ho and the mister plays by the rules so we don't get in trouble. There is an area we missed out on bottle digging because he wouldn't go back after the construction crews left for the day and I'm sick about it but there were no signs at the entry point of the property that said stay out.hopefully you'll find some great sites soon that you'll have total access to.They say patience is a virtue, yada yada .

Woodswoman, I believe there are times where things happen for a reason. Maybe you were asked to leave so you could find that other area that produced so well.

I go by the motto that; "It's not a perfect world, and don't expect it to be." I applaud you for trying to find the owner.

That reminds me of a story. Not long ago I was given permission to hunt a field that once had an old house on it. The very nice older gentleman who was the owner and I talked for about a half hour about the areas history and said I could detect it anytime and as much as I wanted.. He added however that his son Ted lived next door but would tell him that I was going to be detecting the field, and that he was very protective of their properties.

Well, the next day I came back, was going to check in with the owner but he wasn't there, so I just started detecting. After a few minutes I looked up and saw this guy running towards me from the other side of the field, and said, "Did you know that this is private property?" And with a big grin I said, "Hey Ted, that's exactly what your dad said you were going to say." Did he talk to you about my coming?" I extended my hand and we shook and I introduced myself and he said, "Yeah he did, I just wanted to make sure it was you!"

Great story and kudos to you for having the right answer already prepared.

the way I see it is that a 'for sale' sign means it is owned by someone. I can't recall ever having seen a for sale sign on any public property

hi woodswoman I took my coil and mounted it side ways then went between the corn rows moving it like a vacuum cleaner. last week I found two Indians 1906 1898 a Lincoln 1915 d a 1906 barber. just don't knock the farmers corn down. my wife and I have a small produce business so we have business cards when I ask to metal detect I hand them one. old plat maps sometimes shows house locations and churches . old picnic grounds would be a good place. county fair grounds are a good place to. have a nice day dave

Excellent story. Thanks for sharing it ! :)

I believe you couldn't be more right. It sent me to a good field full of finds :)

Thanks Dave, I hit fairgrounds and surrounding areas all the time. Picnic areas too, parks.
I got PERMISSION today to hunt a 1800's house but the vibes were so bad and the smell, that I didn't stay long at all. I also noticed holes in the yard from poaching diggers !

Oh come on now... Lighten up. She did say lesson learned... Yeah? I bet she didn't post up here for a lecture. It's for the rest of us to learn and not make the same mistake. Like what's posted, some people can get shot in some parts of the world.. I'll definitely be very careful in my hobby when I travel..

Thanks for havin' my back on that. Geez, some got a bit carried away :) turned out to be a good days finds !

My friend and I had the police called on us a few days ago on public property. The officer said no less than 3 people called on us. One girl even came up and talked to us beforehand and acted like everything was fine:cowards. How bored and paranoid do you have to be to call the police in the middle of the day because 2 guys are digging up some pennies. I really have met a lot of jerks in my last few days of detecting.

I hear ya ! They come in all ways and in all places. Sometimes no matter how nice when asking, they still have to be nasty but on public property..... Really ?
One lady I asked permission from yesterday said ok, go back and talk to Wendy and within 30 seconds, she changed her mind and said NO !! There was no explainable reason for that. Oh well, that's when you move on.... :)

Look, i dont want to beat a dead horse, but i and oers did not get carried away. You said you tried to get permission and couldnt find the owner so went ahead and dug. So,e people on here will read that and go do that, especially some of the kids.

On the other hand, you were able to move someplace else and find some great things and have fun.
