I researched 2 old places last night. The 1st used to be an old hospital dating back to the late 1800's. I went and asked permission and got a firm " NO, NOT A GOOD IDEA " ! So I went to an old school ( torn down now ) I knocked on a door, no answer. I saw a realty sign and called the number, spoke to a guy but he didn't know who owned the piece I was on. It wasn't posted and was abandoned so I dug for just a bit. A lady showed up and said " ma'am, do you know this is private property ? " I said no, I'm very sorry. We talked for a minute but she said to leave... That was the first time I was ran off and I'm sure it won't be the last. She calmed her tone down after I apologized at least 6 times but I won't go back there. :)
I went to a field I've been at before and found this stuff. Lesson learned ! Ha ha

Look, i dont want to beat a dead horse, but i and oers did not get carried away. You said you tried to get permission and couldnt find the owner so went ahead and dug. So,e people on here will read that and go do that, especially some of the kids.

Let the dead horse lay. Parents will teach their kids the rules as they should. No one is gonna read my little thread and do that. Wake up and realize that if they read one thread, they will read more and learn the lesson ! That's all. There was no harm done and I did move on to a better place with coins to be found. Thanks

After reading this thread the last few days I'm going to chime in. We all love this hobby/addiction/passion! It's why we are all on here. This game we play is one of the most rewarding and at the same time the least damaging and one of the least bothersome to others. It's a shame we live in a world today that people are the way they are. I'm 39 and can say I'm still stunned today to see how much society has changed in 30 years since I was a young kid. Kindness and respect on a huge level is just not present on half the level it was as a kid. You could go up to any old house and ask to dig a 9-10 times the answer would be "sure". An empty lot and you swinging a detector wouldn't have turned a head. But now an empty lot that will soon have a paved parking lot or a concrete foundation and you are there is half the time absolutely off limits. I was digging at an old home site a while back that was for sale by owner. I called and spoke a while and he gave me permission. Three hours into my hunt a truck pulls up a guy in his mid 20's comes up and the first thing he said was " Do you have permission to be here? " No introduction and no greeting. These are the things I'm talking about. I said yes I did. He said well I'm going to have to ask you to leave and if you don't I'll have to call the cops. He went on to say this is a tight knit community here and we look out for each other. I said well I happen to live here and just a block away. I told him I would go. I wanted to respond to his comment of " this is a tight knit community " and say my recollection of a tight knit community was they walked up and introduced themselves and didn't threaten to call the cops when I was extremely courteous. So wether you have permission or not there will always be people that can't stand to see that you are having a good time.

Good points. Today's society is being forced through political correctness to think and act in a certain way that was very different 40 years ago.

I have been run off before when I had "permission" (evidently not from owner). I have also been told I could hunt property but only if I had my husband with me! & it was a guy that told me that. oh well, guess we women folk still need protection.

Thumbs up on that ! All that you spoke of is so true. Things will never the way they were when we were kids living in friendly neighborhoods when everyone knew and spoke to their neighbors. Excellent words we should live by even today :) thanks for chiming in.

go for it

I am in east central area. I have permission to hit several corn fields when it's harvest time however I read another thread about the stalks making it too hard to swing your coil. I'll wait and see. I don't know the history of these fields yet but sure want to find out. Thanks for the info on maps, those are good options to try.

woodswoman at least you made an effort, many times you ask permission and you get denied, just because you asked. Im more of the dig now ask later, people are power hungry and busybodies. A lot of times they have nothing to do with the property. I hope you asked the woman if she owned the property and if she could give you permission to detect? Why not we are already in for a penny so to speak, nothing to lose. Im in nw indiana and when i see an abandonded or empty property I will watch it for a while, if no activity i will md it til i get kicked off. Not out to disrespect anyone, just know that if I ask (as I have many times) the people you just gave that power to(real estate, neighbors, etc,.) all of a sudden feel responsible and say NO. So me being the nice guy I am I relieve them of that burden lol. Good luck in the future and be careful out there.HH

Good finds !!! Way to stick with it. I worked this ine site 3 times thinking it was still county owned. This same red truck passed me every time I was there. Then a lady stopped as me not to hunt there any more.. Go figure,

Funny how a thread sort of takes on a life of it's own, ain't it. LOL

I read the whole thing through and nothing I can say will add.

But, I will anyway. :)

It's a temptation to us when we see/research an area we are just simply SURE will hold the treasures. We just have to resist that temptation. Too many bad things can happen to our fragile hobby.

That said, (and I may have missed this in my reading), I just gotta ask a small question.
When this person came up, and said "Do you know this is private property?"
Did you say, Oh my! NO! I didn't DO YOU OWN IT?

LOL!!!

Hello, im also not trying to take sides here and im sure you have learned your lesson by now..live in mn. and we have 200 acres to hunt and fish on..signs are posted but new mn. law is you can still be arrested for trespressing if no signs are posted.if it is not yours and you do not pay taxes on it then you have no business digging there...i cannot believe you still went ahead and dug..not your normal detecting person in my book...sorry but you need a good lesson in life...i hope you will learn from this otherwise get out of the hobby because we do not want a bad name...
i hope you understand and takeit well.

thanks,
Gary

Good Lord, I never knew there were so many "perfect" people out there in this hobby. After 3 pages of basically bashing the original poster for admiting she made a mistake and sharing it with everyone so maybe someone could learn from it, you still have idiots acting like a high school principle talking down to junior high student. I wouldn't be suprised, or blame her, if the OP said the heck with all these jerks and moved on to another metal detecting forum...they are out there you know. Oh, and I know this the largest and most popular site, or whatever...but quantity doesn't always mean quality.

I don't post much, but I have been visiting this website for years, and it seems more and more people these days are feeling it's their duty to share their own moral beliefs or jump at the chance to point out someone else's weakness or mistakes. Pretty pathetic.

Lighten frickin' up, Francis.

If the ones of us who have NEVER hunted without permission and were truthful would yell really loud, chances are it would be really silent out there!! HH

It’s not just on Treasurenet. I see it on other forums I visit. It’s a sign of the times.

You couldn't have said it any better. I am already to the point where I hate to get on here now and that's just sorry. It's so enlightening to know there are so many perfect people in the HOBBY. That's all it is... A HOBBY. Suck it up and shut it up. You should be digging relics instead of acting like relics. If I stay on this forum, you sure wont hear much from me anymore.....I used to think this forum was a great place to learn and gain experience from people all over the world, see their exciting finds but I have to wonder. I don't think I could ever be perfect enough. Yeah right !

Very well said.
