We managed to get a full day of digging in today! Went to a field we haven’t been to before recent rain meant the walking and digging were easier than it has been, got a great mix of lead, musket balls, crotal bell, buttons, a 1860 penny and some items we have no clue about, the huge lead...
Spent a full day wandering the field where himself found the Dirk last week, obviously I was hoping to find my own… alas this was not the case, but we got an amazing haul of my kinda treasure…. buttons by the score, a weird thing with a ship on it, the cutest miniature buckle still with its pin...
So after the excitement of yesterday‘s find… we set out with high hopes for today… but… it was not to be. It was 4.5 miles of cold, hot and at times wet.. the field was really tough on the ankles, but we found a few interesting items, including this amazing part horse shoe, another monster 😍...
So after unplanned tasks, we only got out for an hour, so we went to a local field we have been in before, and found a few targets.
A nice shiny silver button, and lead and the tiniest target ever which took me forever to find 😂 but it was lovely to be out in the sunshine with beautiful scenery...
So we went back over last nights area and got a few more targets out, another conjoined musket ball, musket balls, 2 buttons, a crusty coin, buckle and other little bits.
A perfect day spent walking in the sun produced these lovely items… no hammered, but happy to save these. Not sure if that’s a coat of arms on the metal pendant? And more of the little lead pieces... we now have 7 of them. Any IDs as ever much appreciated. x
Can someone date this button I found? I seen similar police buttons but they had a wreath around the P. Thinking civil war Era, maybe a little later. Any info from the button connoisseurs is appreciated.
So a new field tonight, on the old maps there is a “station” noted… but no train tracks so we wondered if I could be military... clearly something was happening there as lots of targets…. And old pottery on the surface.
We went back to the same field as yesterday but decided to start from the other side… best decision eva!!
I know loads of you find proper treasure, so this may not seem much to you, but im proud everytime we find a little bit of the past.
so here you have a button obvs 😆 the gold gilt is...
Found this Wahams & co "Superfine" button with what appears to be a otter standing on rocks near a waters edge. Was told this particular button wasn't in the "big book of buttons" and could be a very valuable specialty collector piece and that it can be dated back to late 1700's, early 1800's...
Hello Tnet fam,
I hope you’re all well. I retrieved this from an 1800’s permission. It looks like it’s had a square nail hammered through it possibly. I can’t make the name on the front out other than potentially ‘The’ on top and ‘Brand’ on bottom.
Any ideas what it may say? Is it a button?
I...
Hello all! New to metal detecting here. I’ve had wonderful luck with a few early 1800s sites. The most recent site produced a beautiful gilt button. The picture doesn’t do the back justice, in person you can clearly read the company name on the back “Bennet & Burnham”. Anyone have any further...
I have hit what appears to be a Confederate Cavalry camp in North Alabama. Several plain flat buttons and odd iron objects with Sharps and Maynard bullets occurring with Roundballs. This is the first item that could be identified as North or South.
It is a 35mm, heavily corroded item that...
This specimen was found on a site that has produced artifacts from the Civil War. The material is unknown, but patinated like brass while retaining a aluminum or stainless like gloss. This appears to be an eagle facing left without a shield against a lined field. On the back, stars are...
Hi! I’m new to metal detecting ☺️
My husband and I bought a farm in Moody Alabama and I got out there this morning. We were told by neighbors that there used to be an old homestead on the front end of the property, so that’s where we focused today.
My 15 year old son and I found this button...
This button is a brass, two piece type with the back having corroded away. It is 22.2 mm wide. It appears to feature a stylish “R” and was found in North Alabama on a site that was occupied by both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.
Any information on type, age, rarity...
I found this button metal detecting and I just started getting into the hobby. I don’t know much about buttons but I cannot figure out anything about it. It’s a flat button and reads ‘superfine’ on the back with like a floral design at the bottom. I have tried searching but have had no luck...
I found this button at a home in Central/Southern Indiana. At first I didn't know what I had but after cleaning it still has the shank. Unfortunately I can't make out the letter on the back very well.
The house has been there since the 1880's or possbily earlier. I found a patent name plate...
I found new site at the park the other day where a home site was located from an 1859 map. I had tried to locate the site couple times before but with no luck. I finally found it. I found an 1860 IH with a square nail hole through it along with an old pin and small gold plated ring a couple...
It is a one piece very heavy iron I thing . It has striations around the ball part.
The shank is drilled. Very odd to me ... I found ball buttons before but first one like this..
Hi there! Brand new to the group but found you while trying to learn more about a button in found in the ground outside of our home in NW Minnesota. Any help identifying this buttons origins would be highly appreciated.
These finds are from my towns meeting house. I finally got permission from the head of the board of caretakers that run it. Of course that didn?t stop almost every car going by to stop and ask me what I was doing. There is such a stigma about metal detecting. People just don?t get it, even after...
So as soon as canonballguy made my day, by informing me I had found a US army shoulder belt plate. Needless to say I went back to the exact lot in this large abandoned town and starting searching. On my very first plug I pulled #1 out and when I went to check the hole before filling it in. #2...
Hello All,
I've had this button for sometime and finally dug it out for some research. I would like to date this button. It has a P on the front. I was thinking police? But I can't find any one like it. I would also like to know how to clean it up some without destruction. Thanks for your...
I found it at a skirmish site in LA. Obviously it was corroding badly in the ground but i understand that's normal with LA buttons since many were made by smaller manufacturers.
I can see some lettering on the back but I cant see a compete word. I'm attaching pics of the front and back...
Hi! I found this button searching in my backyard in NC the other day and I have no idea what it is. My land dates back to the late 1800s and I've found a lot of stuff from that time. I have no idea who lived there or how old this button is!!!! It seems like a military button but I can't find any...
Pulled this 2 piece button out, thought it was a coin at first. The front of the button immediately separated and fell to the ground where it broke in half. You can barely touch it without it disintegrating, bummer. Any help with ID would be appreciated. Amazed to see the thread is still...
Hello,
I am new to Metal Detecting and on a recent trip found an antique button that I can’t identify. Are there any button experts that know what it came from or what it is? I’d really appreciate your help. Thank you in advance.
Hello all,
I've found plenty with the naked eye, but this is MY very 1st metal detecting find that isn't a pull tab or junk.
I am guessing Navy button? Found where a town existed in the 1890's (Per the County Map) and is now a park. I believe this more than likely to be from one of the...
Well it happened! My girlfriend found a block I button yesterday & I said that I would get mine tomorrow (today) and boy did I! I told my self long ago that I would never find a buckle or a confederate button in my hunting career, but I was proved wrong. dig every target no matter how bad it...
A few weeks back I found this button back, 8 inches deep, in Cartersville, Ga in an area I've previously hunted and have found countless other Civil War relics. After cleaning it up and trying to make out the letters, I can confidently say on the outer edge it is marked "Scovilles & Co" Below...
